Waterproof mattress = perfect for vomiting viruses, as evidenced by the 1am - 5:30am vomit fest Nate had last night.
(This works super awesome with shorties.)
(Super advanced parent trick to use a sheet much larger than the mattress in case the bucket gets missed.)
Next step: get the boys to run to their bathroom a few feet away when they start vomiting, rather than running to our room, vomiting along the way.

I like the larger sheet idea. We have an old twin futon mattress that we use (wish I had thought of keeping the crib mattress!), and the pink NICU bucket that they sent us home with serves us well too. It's good to be prepared :) But I'm sorry to hear that Nate is sick; hope is feeling better today and that you'll all be able to get some rest.
Aww, he's so cute. I love his feet sticking of the end of the mattress. I hope he's feeling better and that he can keep the germs to himself.
Getting a sick kid to run to the toilet before spewing is tough. We keep a bucket in Michael's room, and as soon as I hear him starting, I rush in, grab it, and try to catch.
Ah, how I wish I didn't know that blue bucket quite so well.
Hey, I had that last night with Clair, but from the other end. Yay!!!
We still have the crib mattresses from the grandkids ~ we take them into the pantry and put one under us and one over us whenever we have a tornado alert ~ that way the canned goods won't bonk us on the head if we actually get a tornado and things fall of the shelves ! FYI !
sorry to hear he was up most of the night sick. Hard on him and hard on you too! Hope he's better soon and that no one else catches it!!
Until we had kids that could make it to the bathroom we told them to finish puking wherever they started. Throwing away a comforter was much easier than cleaning carpets, etc. Sometimes they did throw up on carpet but at least it wasn't all over the house. The worst is a child that makes it to the toilet and makes a last minute u-turn decision to throw up someplace else. Another favorite memory is the puke covered child trying to get into your bed because theirs is puke filled.
ooh, this is brilliant and i'm filing it away for when we're done with the crib.
hope the guys feel better!
