Taking one for the team

In my lifetime, I have ice skated less than 10 times. However I did a lot of roller blading in college (HEY, it was California in the early 90s) and fortunately those skills carry over to ice skating. But ice skating? It's cold. It's easy to fall down. I really suck at stopping. Falling on ice! It's okay once a year but I don't love it.

Saturday was the last day of outdoor ice skating in Raleigh, so I sucked it up for my boys, all of whom love ice skating. And as always, it was fun to see the boys doing something they enjoy.

Ice skating

(And because I do a terrible job at posting pictures of myself on this blog, here I am.)

Ice skating

In past ice skating trips, the boys skated and fell for about 30 minutes then they were done. This time? At the two hour mark, I had to call it because my shins were hurting. I think Nate and Alex could have stayed out there all day. The only thing that lured them away was Krispy Kreme.

Ice skating

The boys each managed to figure out ways to motor around the rink on their own. Nate's plan - go as fast as possible. Alex's plan - try and try and try and fall and fall. Grandparents, please enjoy the videos. Nate in blue, Alex in black.

Love the video. It looks like the managed to do just about everything except glide on the blades. It doesn't seem to have slowed them down any.

I'm impressed! I grew up ice skating (or at least for the few years I lived in Germany) and rollerblading. Matthew and I went on a "romantic" ice skating date when we were dating. He totally bit the dust..err.ice! Seriously, he still has the scar.

I'm with you! I could not believe how long my boys kept skating last time we went. Seth was like Nate. William was like Alex. What a good sport you are! Ed used to play ice hockey, so he's a natural on the ice and makes me look like a total buffoon. That's okay. I actually think it's fun, too. (For, say, half an hour, maybe.) :-)
