An interesting post script to the friendship letters

Let me back this up for a minute.... before we went to the beach, I realized Valentine's Day fell on a Thursday and Jon would be out of town the entire week. Not being a rookie to this single mom thing, I brought art supplies and shoe boxes to the beach. By Sunday night, both V day boxes and cards were done. Sometimes I feel like we focus on our failures as parents that I thought I'd toot my own horn!

VDayBoxes

After the boys went to bed last night, I went through their Valentine boxes to see their friendship letters. In 7 years writing here, I hope I've gotten across that Alex is a SWEETHEART. Every single last letter in his box said "you are kind" or "you are nice". Just like his dad.

I was so excited to read Nate's letters and the VERY FIRST letter I pulled out of the box was this:

Busted out laughing!

Ben wrote a candygram to a classmate, "I like to smell your hair"

When I asked him if she seemed upset that he was smelling her hair, his answer was no she likes it.

Oh, good for Alex but um, wow - poor Nate.

Labels suck. We as a society really are all about putting labels on people. Even well-intentioned labels can hurt. It's the zero sum fallacy - "there can only be one whomever" - when actually the truth is, there can be MANY "sweetheart" guys, many "smart" kids, "handsome" kids, "athletic" kids, etc. (Can you guess I was mislabeled as a child?)

I am laughing too! Sounds like that kid needs to see Nate's dancing skills so he can add at least one more thing to his list of likeable qualities.

Hehe. Poor Nate.

You know how I met my future husband in high school? He was IN LURVE with my twin sister and thought I was her. He wrote this long love note about how great she was and gave it to me. Then when I told him I was her twin he was all, "Well...can you give it to her then?"

Sick burn.

So wait, if Alex is nice like his Dad, then Nate is (what) like his Mom? :-)
