I'm shooting baaaasssketballlllllllll

This fall, the boys were in a basketball skills class at the YMCA. The class focused on the fundamentals and the last class, this past Saturday, was a full game.

After watching the skills class all fall, Jon and I were VERY skeptical of how the game would go. There was MUCH tomfoolery at every class. On game day, we were very shocked and delighted at how serious the boys were and how much their skills had improved. The Y rocks, again.

However, if you ever need a good laugh... I mean the kind where you are breathless and shaking and tears are streaming down your face ... you should watch 5 year olds play organized sports. I broke down laughing hysterically. Why? A picture does not do this justice and fortunately Jon was there to capture a video.

That's Nate with 26 seconds left, getting the rebound. Apparently dribbling and passing are for suckers. Bonus: you can hear Alex shouting "Nate! Nate!" over and over for Nate to pass it, and Nate never does.

Afterward they had a trophy ceremony in the racquetball court and the boys were so proud of themselves.

Elfie played with Alex's ipod overnight. I hope he doesn't beat me in Plants vs Zombies.

Watching Nate run across the court without even thinking once about dribbling reminds me that life is too short to follow every single rule, every single time. Sometimes you just gotta go for it!
Nate = my hero!

P.S. I'm curious as to how many folks will get the title of your post.

Too funny! We pretty much experienced the same thing with flag football this year. Several times Elijah would just walk up to a kid, not even playing and yank off his flag!

Thanks for making me smile. I love the video. Yes organized sports at this age are SO FUN to watch. Soccer is my personal fave but basketball might be a close runner up after that video!

I agree that sports at this age are hilarious. Cole played basketball last winter and it was pretty horrible. The best part was the actual game in which Cole stood frozen like a statue in the middle of the court the entire time. The one time the ball came to him he immediately passed it to someone else. I could have been embarrassed by his performance, but I was proud he made the only pass of the game. YMCA basketball looks better than our parks and rec league. The kids had to use actual baskets which meant no one could actually make any shots.

Very cute. Nate's traveling is pretty epic.
In May we went to Colorado for my nephew's 4th birthday and watched him play 3-4 year olds soccer. I can only describe it as a swarm of bees following the ball around. They were hilarious. Just as likely to shoot on their own goal as the other or stopping in the middle of a play and yelling "I have to pee!" They don't keep score and everyone wins. Too funny.
