This was the first time Alex didn't cry and scream at the dentist so they were both given the privilege of picking any toy from the treasure chest. After talking to the dentist, I went around a corner to find Nate proudly holding a toy dart gun.
I made Nate pick a different toy. The hygenist asked what was wrong and I said we don't treat guns as toys in our house. And that they could not choose any other kind of weapon from the prize box either. It was a super awkward moment where I knew I was being silently judged but I was standing my ground.
I don't really care if I win lame parent award on this one. It seems completely crazy to me that you can't get CANDY at the dentist but you can walk out with a toy gun. I mean, what if they shot each other in the teeth?
(In other news, we could see the grown up teeth on the x-rays pushing up their front bottom baby teeth. )
(Now I'm off to have fun with the boys the rest of the day.)

Errands and appointments or even worse, on occasion we have taken our older son to drop-in daycare on days his school was closed. Sigh, sometimes you just have to get a project out.
I wish I had a picture of our xrays to show with the full sets of adult teeth coming in. They looked like sharks.
And our dentist gives out cookies...
I applaud you for standing your ground on the toy gun issue; it's too big a deal to be treated trivially. Have a fun day with your boys
Not every parent, nor child. I'm not surprised that my office is open, but I sure was surprised that school was open. But, we aren't having fun either, that's for sure.
Umm, our hygenist told us that they let their 3yr old hold a real gun!
We don't treat guns as toys in our house either. Toy guns must be completely unrealistic - neon, clear, etc.
My dad was a police officer so we had real guns in the house growing up. We had a 100% guns-are-not-toys rule. My parents once sent a neighbor kid home for coming to play with a cap gun. I fully intend to enforce the same rule.
I think it's awesome that you stood up for your beliefs! I would have stood their "um, um, umm...ing" and then offered to trade the toy for something else once we were in the car.
We have nerf guns (bright orange/green) that shoot foam things (not darts, something cylindrical...I don't know is that a dart?) that the girls play with, totally unrealistic. They also know proper gun safety, and that if they ask to see a gun, Daddy will show it, explain it, etc. They are well aware that guns are not something to touch/fool with/joke about etc. We do 'what would you do' scenarios with them frequently. I totally get where you're coming from, and good for you for standing up for your beliefs.
This post made me LOL. Thank you for the mid-day smile.
