Halloween 2011

It had to happen. After FIVE Halloweens in a row where the weather was sunny and in the 70s, we finally got a rainy, windy, cold Halloween. We weren't going to let that stop us. Oh no, I was going to stand in the rain and make sure my boys got to trick or treat until they dropped.

You would never know Jon held an umbrella over me while we stood in the rain to get these photos.

Because of the cold and rain, we got a lot of early trick or treaters. I mean, people rang our doorbell at 5:30 while we were eating dinner. This led to the boys wanting to head out early, which led to crankiness because we didn't want to ring the doorbells while other people were eating dinner.

(This picture pretty much sums up life with twin 5.5 year old boys.)

We did go out and they were COLD. Jon did one loop, they came back to warm up and refuel with candy, and I went out for another loop. I think we hit five houses before they both complained they were too cold and wanted to stop.

After the boys went to bed, I told Jon that not every Halloween can be THE BEST HALLOWEEN EVER. What matters is that we're out there every year, trying to make memories, and keeping a positive attitude. From their perspective, they still got to decorate the house, dress up in costume, and get tons of candy.

And from my perspective, I want every photo of my children to be in masks. No need to look at the camera, no need to smile, everyone wins. Well, except for me and Jon who stood in pouring rain to take photos.

Wow, I've now seen so many pictures of your boys that I can tell which on is which even when their faces are covered with masks.

The great thing about Halloween for kids is that even if you only hit a few houses and do a little bit of decorating, they still think it's the most awesome thing ever. Even if mom and dad are cold and wet the entire time.

Isn't the sizing on those costumes ridiculous? I think the size 4-6 one for for children ages 3-4. How does that make sense? We went the next size up (even though in any other kind of clothing they would have been grotesquely oversized) and it worked, but it had me in Target stressed out.

I think that's the hard part to remember sometimes - they can't all be GREATEST EVER. As much as we'd always like to top the previous year, sometimes life takes a little step back. Ah well.

You are giving your kids memories and that's what is most important. I agree with Liz that they can't all be the greatest ever.

I love the costumes. And the fact that you still have them do a hugging pose, even while dressed as mechanical beings. Soo cute!

Hahahaha, Tanika, that's not a "hugging pose," that's Nate punching Alex in the face. :)

Hi Laura. Love the blog and the photos, and covet your skills and lens and camera.

We also had a Not-The-Best-Halloween-Ever with our 14 year old being unable to come up with a costume, and our 17 month old being terrified of his. Oh well, pictures were taken, memories were made, no one was injured. Let's call that a success.

I think that is a very important message to take away - that not every holiday is going to be THE BEST EVER. If we bend over backwards to keep topping ourselves, it won't end up being fun for anyone. When life hands us lemons, we make lemonade right?

And I love when the kids have on masks because you are right, it makes picture taking much easier! Love their costumes! I am sure they will look back and remember all the good and not that it was cold and wet. You guys rock as parents for standing out in the rain to take pictures and take them trick or treating despite the weather.
