Laura: How was church?
Nate: It was really, really bad. They told a story about a man whose family needed food. He stole a loaf of bread and they wanted to kill him! You shouldn't kill someone if they steal bread!
Laura: When do you think it is right to kill someone?

Alex: You should only kill someone if they kill someone else. If someone tried to kill me, I would kill them.
Laura: Some people like me think we should not kill people. Being in jail forever is a very bad punishment because they do not get to see their families or celebrate Halloween or have Thanksgiving dinner or have a birthday party.
Alex: What if someone tries to kill you?
Laura: If someone tries to kill you, punch them in the throat. Then they will fall to the ground and you can run to get the police.
Alex: I will punch them in the throat two times. (makes air punches)
Laura: The first time you punch them in the throat, they will fall on the ground because it hurts so bad. You should NOT punch them in the throat again while they are lying on the ground.
Nate: Maybe we could share our bread with people who don't have bread and then no one needs to steal or be killed.
I AM FINALLY GETTING THROUGH TO MY LITTLE REPUBLICAN!

I love it. It's amazing to see little minds even thinking about such heavy topics. What a good way to engage the boys when they ask you about these things.
Have you read The Crying Tree by Naseem Rakha? It's fiction, deals with the death penalty, and is an excellent book. I've also been very moved by Sister Helen Prejean's books.
Well played!
Your big Republican objects: I just don't want GOV'T in charge of charity. It's the responsibility of the Church, and we've fallen down on the job. So the private citizen's responsibility, if you will.
TOTALLY agree with Lindsay. We call Nate our republican as a joke! We are trying to teach charity at home.
This conversation is awesome!
Gives me hope in the sorry state of this world. I can't believe your boys have such deep thoughts at just 5!! How do they go from saying "TRUCK!!" 5,000 times a day to being thinking, rationalizing, contemplative little people in such a short time? Truly amazing.
And -- just for the record -- when the government steps in to help people who live, work and pay taxes here, or contribute to our society in any way, that's not charity. That's called a "responsibility." It's charity when churches, private citizens and social service agencies do it.
I would have paid money to see the air punches. that was a great convo :)
You've got to teach them the inside thigh pinch and twist. How on earth are those sweet shrimpies going to reach a bad guy's throat?!
