Now THIS is how you start Track Out

Friday Nate and Alex finished their first quarter of kindergarten. They will be "Tracked Out" (on vacation) for the next three weeks, attending YMCA day camp. To celebrate their first quarter, we went on a family camping trip. Through friends, we learned there are two NC state parks where you can rent heated cabins with kitchens and one... Hanging Rock... is only two hours from our house.

SWEEEEEEETTTT!

NC01

There was ZERO cell phone reception. No tv, no internet, no phone. It was glorious. We spent mucho quality time together as a family and did tons of hiking. (Nate is saying, "Hold my hand mommy!")

NC02

The boys got to see their very first waterfalls.

NC03

They got to have their first real campfire. See thousands and thousands of stars for the first time. First sighting of the Milky Way. First live bluegrass music.

NC04

First canoe ride.

NC05

When Jon and I moved to North Carolina, these are the kinds of things we had hoped to do with the boys. There are just no words to describe how beautiful North Carolina is to me. The beauty makes Alex dance for no reason.

NC06

We went into the weekend with low expectations and our expectations were wildly exceeded. While both boys loved hiking, Alex was apparently born to hike. He was fearless and didn't complain a single time about the cold, the distance, the steepness, or anything. He just ran and ran and ran. He wanted to climb to many (dangerous scary) places.

NC07

(In the distance you can see the Blue Ridge Mountains!)

NC08

Nate said Saturday was his best day of his entire life. Alex just smiled and smiled and hugged us tightly. Jon said he couldn't believe we had such a great first camping trip. And I feel like someone needs to pinch me. I can't believe we were at the beach four weeks ago and this weekend we were here. North Carolina is pretty freaking spectacular.

Sounds heavenly. There have been lots of "this is the best day of my life" comments lately, and that, my friend, is awesome.

I have a very short list of places I want to live when we finally settle down. NC is at the top! I'm glad y'all had such a great time!

I love that Nate has so many best days of his life. That kind of enthusiasm is awesome.

And I love that Alex never needs a reason to dance.

It looks like camping is perfect for both your boys.

That's about 2 hours from us too. Can you send me the rental details? It would be a nice weekend trip for us. As long as there is heat which your blog promises there will be :-)

Fall camping is the BEST! By far my favorite family activity when I was growing up. As for furnished HEATED cabins--DUH!!! Why the hell haven't I thought of that? I know there are places around here with cabins. Going to do a little research right now!!! (Although with things as crazy as they are around here, everything is probably already booked in October . . . )So glad you had an awesome weekend!

This post gave me chills. The family time, the scenery, the boys sentiments at the end of the day. Love it all.

And Laura - your photography is absolutely stunning. Recently I've been thinking it couldn't get any better, but these shots are breathtaking! They capture the beauty, the emotion, even the smell and the temperature. Awesome work!!

That's my kind of camping! I am not a fan of tents and sleeping on the ground. Such a beautiful place too.

What an amazing trip! I want to take my girls camping, but I'm not so much in for the tent thing. A cabin would be perfect!

And seriously on the pictures you got! Wow!!

This kind of stuff is why we wanted to raise the boys in Colorado. I think it's a similar quality of life. Planning our first cabin trip as we speak...

Photos are awesome as usual :)

I will be honest, I have never stepped foot in North Carolina in my life, but those photos make me want to pack up my life and move there immediately. What fun you had!

We love going off-grid, my in-laws live on 20 acres in Wisconsin, and we are headed up there in a couple weeks for some quality family time. Except our hikes will likely require a lot more carrying of the children. (but their cabin has an incredible wood stove that keeps the place in the 80s... Now only if we could figure out some way of toddler-proofing. Eeek.

Carolina on My Mind all the Way.

So glad you had a great way to celebrate the start of kindergarten and the first track out.

Hope they have a blast at the Y (I bet they will, the counselors are wonderful). Curious if Peanut Butter and Jelly Time makes the the camp playlist.
