I have a love/hate relationship with fall. The end of September marks the most beautiful time in this part of North Carolina, with lack of humidity and perfect (75) temperatures. All of mother nature explodes in color here. The mornings feel crisp and there is so much to do in fall.
But... I can always feel winter coming. I can feel summer winding down. The sun starts to set earlier. I often have cranky moments when I realize the weather is going to be bad on the weekend. As much as I enjoy fall, I also feel this sense of urgency to suck every last minute of enjoyment out before winter comes.
This weekend was full of last-minute summer activities. An amazing evening with my church ladies' group, laughing and chatting with the windows open. A playdate for Nate and Alex that included coloring on the porch. An evening with friends, sitting on their porch with cocktails. Sports in the backyard.
I've given a lot of thought into how I can avoid the crankies of fall and I've decided to start a 365 Project - one photo a day for a year. I started on Friday, the first day of fall. In the past I failed because I started in winter (hate winter), and I tried to take all my photos with the big camera. This time I'm being gentle with myself.... and others.
The first step in this process is to STOP asking the boys to "be good" for the camera. I wrote more about this on my photography blog. If they are in pictures, I am going to let them be themselves. Two minutes with a camera letting them act however they wanted led me to this:

We'll see how the year goes.
PS. After almost 6 years blogging, I finally hit it big time (sarcastic) as someone stole my photos and pretended they were theirs. Unfortunately that means all the photos posted here will have watermarks going forward.

Dude, stolen photos?! WTF?!
Love the boys in this one.
I started project 365 last December 4, and used my phone. There's an app for that! Seriously, totally helpful in remembering and having a spot for it right in my hand at some point in the day made a huge difference. (nit sure you want to go slumming like that though ;) ) You can even upload right to their site from the app. I'm going to make a photo book from mine. Can't wait til Dec. 3 when I can see the whole thing done!
Gotta get out my iPhone so I can look at your pictures. Stupid no-flickr-at-work rules.
What!!?!? He/she stole your pics!? How did you figure that out? Horrible!!
I think you have made a wise choice with how you photograph your boys. I love your pictures of them just being themselves. I really would love to see you do a photography book of boys being boys.
I love your idea for 365. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
I love the 365 idea. I did it for just August and I loved it. So sorry taht someone stole your pictures. Good idea to watermark them. I love coming on everyday to see your wonderful pictures!
I love goofy boy pictures. =) Sorry about the weird stealing!
I am sorry your images were stolen. Dislike!
Good luck with your project Laura!!
cool, i had no idea you could start a project 365 in the middle of the year. one of my goals is to take more photos of T, and hopefully get better at it, so maybe that's a good thing for me to consider.
You have all sorts of good ideas :)
I LOVE the photo - so sharp and clear, and perfect. There's just something that looks so professional about it. I've never been one for posed, nicely smiling shots so i love that you let the boys do their thing.
We have been melting in the humidity and rain in Charlotte recently. 80 degree weather...great. 90+% humidity? Not so great. I hope you gave that thief a major smackdown!!
I love this picture!
Even better than anything you could've gotten by asking them to "be good" I would venture to say.
Sorry about the stolen pics.
Sucky.
More work for you, but at least your watermark is fab!
I really love the photos you showcase on your blog and I think whoever should be ashamed of themselves trying to pass off your talent as theirs (I'm actually thinking meaner words than that)
I've been pondering on a project 365 even though I'm not too camera-smart. Can you do a blog post on resources to help with a project 365? I'll be most grateful.
Who stole your photo? I'm going to have my husband go beat them up for you and ask them to give you a formal apology and lots of cash.
My friend Tanika told me about your blog. And I am really enjoying it.
People stealing your pictures is the reason my husband wants my blog private! Sigh! I hate how crazy people make us alter our lives.
Anyway, I am writing because I would like to read your photography blog, but I can't find it. I have wanted to move from a hobbiest to a professional photograher for a while now. You are in inspiration because you are actually doing it. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
