So of course I am going to do the same thing. Lice has been making it's way around the boys' school. Yes, already. There are a million different treatments and preventions. Do you know any good preventions?
A co-worker told me about this leave-in spray called Lice Shield, available at Walgreens. I'm going to pick this up and would love to know if anyone else had suggestions.
Since one of the boys' classrooms had a case of lice, we've starting checking the boys every day. I remember being a kid and having a pencil run through my (very thick very curly) hair to check. When we checked the boys last night, in my strep and cold and decongestant haze, I used a pen on Alex's head. An uncapped pen.
So if they check for lice at school today, they will see a nice long pen mark on Alex's scalp.

I have heard just regular hairspray works as a good preventative measure. The last time we got the girls a haircut, the salon was selling some preventative shampoo that was safe to use daily. I haven't tried it yet, but will if I hear it's going around.
I honestly think the best thing to do is just get in the routine of picking through their hair once or twice a week. We had to deal with it over the summer (no CLUE where it came from) and we didn't use any chemicals, just picked them out. If you pick them out as eggs, it won't ever be an issue.
We recently had a case of lice in our house. This was the best resource I found in my intensive googling: http://www.licesquad.com/. There are a lot of myths out there and this site sets them straight. That is a Canadian company, but I'm sure there is a US equivalent. I hired them to help us with our issue (totally worth the money).
Anyway, they have a product that you can use as a preventive and I'm guessing it is somewhat similar to the one you bought. Tea tree oil and citronella seem to figure heavily on the prevention side of things. A suggestion the Lice Squad folks made to me was to spray not just the kids heads, but also their hats and jacket hoods in the winter - whatever might come in contact with other kids stuff in a crowded school closet type situation. Eco Kids makes a "prevent" shampoo (I think that is actually what it is called), and I've also heard you can just put some tea tree oil in your own shampoo or conditioner (whatever gets used last on your head).
Good luck!
I agree with Jen. I've always heard hairspray works.
I've been using this the last 3 weeks and am clean so far. However, I had the itchiest scalp ever. I switched back to my regular shampoo (H&S) a few days ago, and I'm itching less and less. I don't know what part of it is psychosomatic or what.
They have some products at Ulta as well.
Either way, it's not going to hurt anything. Lice only like clean heads, so if there's anything you can do to change the smell/texture of the hair it will probably work.
I had no idea you could do preventative sprays etc. Very cool. And hey, re: ballpoint pen on head...well, the school will know you did your job! ;D
I hope your house stays lice free. So far *knock wood* our house has been able too!
My sister when we were little, not so lucky! That cleaning and washing my Mom had to do. Freakin' awful.
Wholefoods has an essential oil actually called head live be gone. Mix with water and a bit of vodka (helps with the mixing) and spray on their heads in the am before school. We've done that the past 2 years and had no lice. I swear by it.
Fracking auto correct and lack of proofreading! Head lice be gone! Thats what it's called! Worth every penny!
Heh, i'm totally one of those lazy Facebookers. In my defense it's because Google usually doesn't help, or gives me so many options that I'm paralyzed by indecision.
I'm bookmarking this post as I figure we'll need to deal with this in a few years...
Next time use a uncapped sharpie in a bright color to give the teachers a giggle.
We've been through this twice in the past 6 months at preschool. Lice like clean hair. We skipped hair washing and loaded in spray gel. Hairspray works well too. We checked everyday and so did the school. I've heard like someone else said that tea tree oil keeps them away. Hope you guys stay bug free!
OMG Laura 2 of 4 of my kids got it earlier this week - ewwww!! We've avoided it for the last few years when it seemed like everyone had it but our luck apparently ran out this year. I was advised by several people to use a product called Lice Ice and so far it has been excellent. I sent them back to school the next day. It both kills the lice and can be used preventatively afterward. If your boys get it, make sure you wash *everything* in hot. Good luck!
One someone has lice, nothing really works but picking the nits out religiously.
Boys (at least those with short hair) are a lot less likely to get lice. Girls stick their heads together all the time and have a lot more hair in general (except where I live, where long haired boys are common).
