The first day of kindergarten was a blazing success for both boys! Jon and I were nervous wrecks all day, waiting for the bus to return home at 4 to hear how it went. We agreed 99.99% of our worry was about Alex. He was much more anxious about the first day while Nate was packing things he wanted to give his new friends and teacher.
The bus arrived and they told us everything they loved about school. Lots of new friends. Fun new things to learn in the classroom. They even got to see each other in the cafeteria and at recess.
By far the best part was they didn't have a single fight all night. Alex hugged Nate repeatedly and it didn't turn into WWE. As we walked to the pool, they talked about their new friends and Alex said, "But Nate, you and me are best friends, right?" Nate said, "Oh yeah, we're best friends." I think separation is going to be a GREAT thing for them!
(To make matters even more confusing for you, kindergartens here do staggered entry. They go one day the first week to get comfortable with kindergarten, then Friday we go to meet the teacher, drop off supplies, and ask any last questions. Monday they start full time. In the meantime, they're back at day care the rest of the week.)

My kids' preschool does a staggered start, too. Kind of nice, but also kind of anti-climactic.
I'm so glad they came home happy, and that having some space from each other already seems to be a very good thing. YAY, KINDERGARTEN!
Soo glad everything went great.....after reading your post yesterday I have been nervous about my boys starting next month. This relieves a bit of the anxiety! Thanks!
We have a staggered start here as well. Half of the class goes one day and the second half the next day. I think it's good for a transition. So glad to hear that the first day went well!
I think the staggered start is a brilliant idea, which is precisely why it doesn't happen here in California. LOL!
At any rate, I am glad they BOTH came home happy and I never thought about their time at home being easier because they haven't been together all day. Super cute that Alex asked Nate if they were still best friends".
Big sigh of relief for mom and dad.
Glad to hear they went ok! Nathan starts on a Wednesday. So, I guess it is sort of a 'half' week. I am not as nervous though because this is the same school he went to for preschool and he had camp with a lot of the kids 1 day a week this summer. I still can't believe KINDERGARTEN though! Where has time gone?
I'm so happy to hear that it went so well. I'm interested to hear how the boy's separation goes over time. Also interested to hear about how they do with the different schedule. Does this end random daytime naps?
Yea for successful first day! I'm SO glad Alex was ok with being separated. I'm sure they'll have their off days, but prospects look good. =)
We do kind of a staggered start. Next Friday, we'll go with James for half a day for orientation in his classroom. Then he starts for real the next Wednesday. I'm just going to keep him home that Monday and Tuesday. Upper and Middle school don't start until the following full week.
I'm MUCH more nervous about AJC starting at his Montessori on the 15th.
So glad it went so well! I LOVE the best friends story. And, as I sit at home with one slightly sick kid and one "if she's staying home..." kid and the bickering has already started, I'm thinking separate classrooms sounds fantastic. Though we'll have to wait for 1st grade, as K is private and there's only 1 room.
That is awesome! And I love that you had no fights at night. My thoughts on separation have changed 180 degrees from where they used to be. I think it's going to be a great thing for us as well.
So glad to hear it went well. We only have one more year before we can separate. I'm already counting the days....
OMG. That dialogue between Nate and Alex is the best thing I've ever read. It gives me so much hope that the toy-snatching and brother-slapping that goes on daily in my house will some day evolve into BFF-ship! Awwwwww. So sweet!
