First day of kindergarten

When the boys were newborns, everyone told me the days of parenting are long but the years are short. I had no idea how true that was until today. Our little baby Alex....

Alex029

Somehow got on a school bus for his first day of kindergarten.

First day of kindergarten

The toughest part about being a first time parent to twins is that every milestone is a first... AND a last. Today our other little baby Nate...

Nate022

Also got on a school bus for his first day of kindergarten.

First day of kindergarten

I didn't cry before their first day because I was too concerned with both of their nerves. I didn't cry while taking photos on our front porch, the one we hope to be in on their last day of high school.

First day of kindergarten

I didn't even cry when they got on the bus because look at those happy faces in the front row (where the kids are so tiny, three kids fit in a seat).

First day of kindergarten

Instead the tears came as I sat down to write this as I thought about how quickly the last five years have gone. I've been in this space, documenting our lives together partly as a way to stay present in the moment. Despite my efforts, time has been cruel and it has passed entirely too quickly. Suddenly we have two kindergarteners. The baby years are over, forever.

At the same time I am also excited. I am excited they will make new friends who they might have their entire lives. I am excited they will get to be by themselves for the first time. I am excited at their independence, how they just climbed on the bus without even looking back. I am excited as they start a new phase in their lives.

This parenting thing is hard. And wonderful. And joyful. And amazing.

Happy first day of kindergarten, my babies.

I was so excited for this post, I was checking it before it was possible for you to even have posted it yet!

How exciting! So glad that they both made it on the bus tear free. Such big boys!

Awe, this post almost made me cry. I know I will cry the day I send Kendall off. We still have another year of pre-k here and then it's off to big school.

This post almost made me cry too. Thanks for posting the picture of them on the bus. I showed it to Michael as he is apprehensive about riding the bus.

I found your blog while I was pregnant with my twin boys. Nate and Alex were toddlers at the time and that seemed to be far away for me. Now like 15 minutes later mine are toddlers and yours are off to school. Seems impossible.

I hope they have a great first day and many more to come.

Awwh. Good luck boys. I'm sure it will be an easier day for them than for you. Hope it was fabulous.

Oh good grief, now I am crying!!!!!!
This was a beautiful post, Laura. And as I sit here being nervous and not-as-happy-as-I-should-be about the prospect of a third, reading this helps (it really does) to show me the upside: When the boys go off to kindergarten for the first time, I'll have one more who's still a baby to coddle!
Thanks, as always, for sharing your lives with all of us. You have no idea how much it helps.

P.S. Beautiful photos.

Awww...sniff sniff.....makes the rest of us twin mommy's who have younger twins aware that these moments are sneaking up on us way to quickly....only one more month until my two 3 year olds (yes in ontario you start school in the year you will be turning four) will have to hop on the giant school bus and head out into a big boy world!

Lump in my throat! My sister's first started last Fall and she did the same thing. She was fine until she got in the car after dropping her off.

You totally made me cry too. Kindergarten is two years off for us and yet, we already talk about it almost daily. I know these next two years are going to fly by!

A school bus! I think that's what gets me. No more drop off, they get their all on their own. Such big kids!

Beautiful post Laura! I love the photo of them on the bus and the ones of them looking so big, proud and happy for their first day of K. It is truly unbelievable how the last 5 years have flown by and scary how the next 5 will as well.

Can't wait to hear how their first day went!

I love how you phrase things and explain how you feel as a twin parent. Can I quote you for my own girls? You and Jon should be very proud--what amazing boys you're raising!

Sheesh, you got me with this post, girl. I couldn't hold the tears back. I'm SO glad the boys had a great send-off on their first day. They look so happy and PROUD. Can't wait to hear all about their experiences!

OMG! That bus photo GOT ME. I started bawling. Maybe I'm just hypersensitive because our babysitter told me this morning that the girls only have 15 more days with her until they start school - at which point I started crying. I know what you mean about time being cruel. When they were infants time moved like molasses and I couldn't wait for them to "be older.' Now I want to freeze time and keep them young and silly and innocent forever. God, I'm going to be a freaking wreck come September!!!

Awwwww.....I can't believe you have kindergartners!! I hope they had a fabulous day. I'll be right where you are in one year and I'm crying about it already.

Unbelievable. Such grown-up boys! I love Alex's jaunty pose, and I love that Nate is holding onto his shirt instead of his hips. :-)

Glad the first day went well, I hope they love school!
