This weekend I made a small part of my photography dream a reality by setting up some space for myself to take pictures in my office using all natural light:

There are so many different skills required to photograph people. Obviously there is mastering the camera, mastering light, and mastering photoshop, but there is also learning how to draw a photo out of your subject. A white background is one of the hardest photography experiments I've undertaken because it's just me, my camera, and my subject. There is an art as to when to click the shutter. I'm no master at any of these but I can see definite progress in my work.

Alex's pictures were taken on a super gloomy Sunday morning, while Nate's was taken immediately after sunset. I can't wait to see how it looks when there is a ton of natural light coming into my office.

I've given a lot of thought as to what 2011's theme is. When I came out of Mondo Beyondo a year ago, I had a dream to start a photography business. That dream seemed so far away and so impossible for so many reasons. What about my other job? Am I really an "artiste"? Who's going to pay ME to take pictures? How am I going to learn something massive like Photoshop? Isn't 36 too old to have crazy dreams?
I decided to say NO to all the negative thoughts and YES to that dream.
One short year later, I can produce the above shots in 5 minutes with my boys. While they're still in their pajamas on a lazy Sunday morning. And my website, Laura Case Photography, will be officially launched later this year.
2011 = DREAM BIG

Fantastic theme! One of the etsy things I bought recently is a little scrabble tile pendant with Dream Big on it.
Here is her shop if you want - excellent quality and everyone compliments me when I wear my 3. I couldn't choose so I bought 3 :)

Awesome! So proud of you.
I got my "fancy" camera back last January.
One of my new years resolutions this year was to learn how to use it.
I just started this weekend.
Of course one of my other resolutions is to complete the 500 challenge.
Did I mention that I have a full time job and a 6 month old :)
Fantastic. That is all.
So awesome! The light in those pictures is amazing. I can't believe they weren't taken in the middle of the day.
Can't wait to watch you succeed!

Laura,
I love your photography and your blog. I've commented before, but have not been keeping up with my blog - I have other outlets :). I have to say, though, that I live close enough to you to TOTALLY be one of your customers with your new photography business. I've been looking for someone to take some family photos for me...
Lisa
You are super talented! That's it.
Can't wait for the site. I was just going to ask you when you would have it ready so I can send referrals your way...
SQUEE!!! So excited for you. You are never too old to follow your dream, and 36 is NOT old. I am so glad you said no to the negatives and yes to the dream. Go You!
So damn exciting!
So, so happy for you!!!!! What an amazing adventure you are on!
Awesome! I thought I was the only person in the entire blogosphere that hadn't revealed this year's theme...
I love and so value natural light. You're lucky to have it in your office. Use it and use it often! Looking forward to your website!
