I couldn't even watch The Social Network because the opening dork scenes reminded me way too much of my fellow classmates in a bad way. Dork PTSD, if you will.
Wait Laura... aren't geeks, dorks, and dweebs pretty much the same thing? NO THEY ARE NOT (via laughingsquid):

Most of the boys in Nate and Alex's classroom are into beyblades. For those of you without young boys in your home, beyblades are metal tops that you spin and battle against each other. They look like this:

The boys proudly bought their beyblades with their money and .they play with them by themselves for long periods of time....basically the perfect toy. Beyblades are originally from Japan so when Jon was there last month, he bought some Japanese beyblades for Nate and Alex as gifts. Jon also mentioned there was a beyblade tv show, so I TiVoed it for the boys and didn't preview it.... breaking my hard and fast rule of previewing any show before the boys see it.
I will forever regret breaking my rule of not previewing that show because the boys love it. And.... it is one huge step in the WRONG DIRECTION of dork-dom because it is an ANIME SHOW.

Now if you'll excuse me, seeing this anime picture is giving me some bad dork PTSD flashbacks and I need to go lay down.

Buahahahhahaha!!
I laugh, because I'm currently watching Fullmetal Alchemist (an anime show) while reading your post.
To be honest, I'm quite a lover of anime without reaching the truly dork level. (Unless I am actually a dork and I don't know it, in which case, my argument is futile.)
I do believe it is possible to watch anime and not become totally socially inept. I promise. ;)
However, if you want to avoid this in the future this may be the best rule of thumb to live by: If it's cartoon from Japan, it's probably anime. ;)
This post is total truth! I went to Case Western where the student makeup is pretty similar to Caltech. We always joked that they boys who could make eye-contact with girls walking by on the sidewalks could be comparative Don Juan's. It didn't help that I spent time in Japan as a exchange student in high school, so lots of the CWRU boys found that to be the most interest aspect of me (sad face). Aaaahhhh, the geek life!
Um...so while it was bad that I'm a cat person, I'm not sure how to break the news to you that I also seem to fall into the nerd category as well. Does this mean you are going to unfriend me? ; p
As for the boys, it could be worse, they could have spent the weekend watching reruns of the Mario Brother's cartoon from the '80s like the son a certain nerd that you know.
Hilarious post! One of the boys in the youth Sunday school class I teach is very into anime and he very much falls into the dork category. : )
I was a liberal arts major at a school known for its engineering and science departments (in a NASA town, nonetheless), so I completely get the nerd PTSD!
(Stopped by from Marcia's blog, by the way... Your boys are too cute!)
I just wanted to say one thing, because I'm paranoid...and probably proving that I am indeed a dork...But, in case there is any curiosity, Fullmetal Alchemist is not a children's show. Ok, I'm done, and admit I've probably crossed the line between geek and dork today...
I have a 10-year-old nephew who is a huge, huge fan of beyblades and Avatar: The Last Airbender. I love him like you wouldn't believe, but I can tell you, he is NO geek. Poor thing. If he graduates from high school, we'll all do a happy dance.
And I say this with all love! It's not him; it's a combination of bad parenting and bad schools. But the point is, all kinds of boys love anime. So you can come out from your darkened bedroom now and breathe easy.
How could they not love the show? And how could it not be anime?!
Just for the record I moved the Adventures of the Gummi Bears WAY, WAY, WAY down on the Netflix queue.
Don't tell Bill, I think he was enjoying them as much as Ben.
Envisioning lots of 3 vs 1 fights in our future.
Bwahahahah. I LOVE this post. Jeff and I frequently have the conversation of Dorks vs Geeks. For the record, Geeks are ok in our house too, but dorks or nerds.....soooooo not ok. =)
Analese just looked at the pic of the beyblades and thinks they look really cool. Girls are not immune to these things, evidently;)
Hi Laura, just started following from the twins club! I loved your post and my boys (a little older than yours) went through a huge beyblade craze a little while back, and have also loved a few anime shows in their day! Uh-Oh dork alert!
According to your diagram I am indeed a geek. Massive obsession with all things sci-fi and semi-intelligent. I think my kid falls into the same catagory, *sigh*
thank you for the diagram. will be printing out and possibly laminated to explain my problems to others. I have Cornell PTSD which, I would assume, is like yours, but with a smattering of self-entitled legacies and a few farm boys. However, I am a complete fool and apparently married Comic Book Guy. I'm just hoping they lean more toward Geek and less toward Nerd. Not a lot of high hopes here.
