Another 13.1 miles

Yesterday I ran the Tobacco Road half marathon. I had grand plans to run sub-2:00 but my training went SO FAR off the tracks with illnesses and Jon's international trip. After all my training runs I knew I could make 2:10 (a personal record - PR) if I had a good race.

It was 46F at race time, perfect running weather. So of course, I got about four hours of sleep the night before the race since Nate woke up crying twice with a fever. Then they started the race 20 minutes late. By the time we took off, I was freezing and my carefully planned meal was long digested.

First 5K? 30:00
Second 5K? 27:00. That is a PR for me. BOO YAH.
Third 5K? 29:00.

And then, hello BONK. It was a combination of not enough sleep and running out of fuel because of the delay. Getting old sucks, these kind of bonks never happened in my 20s. The last 3.5ish miles were bad. I'm about 99.9999% certain I saw Dave Ramsey cheering people on at mile 11.5 but I didn't want to stop because I wanted that PR so bad. At mile 12, I realized I was *so close* to a PR but I could not bust it out.

I finished at 2:12:48... missing my PR by 19 seconds. Do you know how little 19 seconds is in a 13.1 mile race??? Oh well, let's look at the bright side.

Tobacco Road half

(Thank you Mannly Mama for the post-race picture since my entourage had to stay home.)
  1. I ran 13.1 miles.
  2. I'm now easily averaging 20 running miles a week.
  3. During training, I lost 10 pounds.
  4. I can run a 27 minute 5K! After running 3 miles. And then run 7 more.
  5. I said no to the Pabst Blue Ribbon stand someone set up at mile 9ish.
After getting over my disappointment of missing the PR (19 seconds is less than 3 bull rides, y'all!) I realized I could have phoned in this half marathon but I went for it. I am physically and mentally stronger than I believed.

I am strongly considering declaring 2011 the year of Go Big or Go Home but I need to think more on that one.

I'm so tempted to say "was there a lack of Bieber?" as the rationale for the 19 sec loss, but I know better :)

So some thoughts-
1. Great wrap up on what long distance running takes. I cannot imagine after my race Saturday keeping going for another 10 miles after a 5k.

2. Yes this SUCKS. Period. That you were this close esp given the events of late.

3. When I think of the commitment and time you put into training and making running an ongoing goal I'm inspired.

Laura, between full time work, twins, a traveling spouse, crappy weather there are SO many days you could of bailed on training, but you didn't.

You stuck it out and proved (once again) you are indomitable.

You are SO tough! You did it! There are decades of running left in you to beat PR's - I know you are disappointed but it's just such a small dimension of running overall!! I am very proud of you.

I did not realize they changed the Raleigh Rocks location and am now seriously pissed I am not in race shape! The new course looks SO MUCH NICER!!!!!!!!!!! Slowly getting back into gear... I am a realist though, so not committing to any kind of race right now.

Ditto on everything HeatherV said. I can imagine the frustration on missing your PR by such a teeny fraction. But regardless, the fact that you ran it, you ran it hard, you didn't phone it in, is a really really impressive accomplishment. You had plenty of big and small excuses you could have used to just give up, but you didn't.

Some day, I'm running a race with you. Mark my words. You'll smoke me, but we'll start together, and it will rock. You're an inspiration. :-)

I know it's hard to miss goals, but I hope you're super proud of yourself. Other people would have used sick kids etc. as an excuse to not push themselves, or not even run, but look at you! That PR is just around the corner, I'm sure of it.

2011 is already Go BIG or Go HOME! You've already rocked a half, and with all the other awesomeness going on, there is no need to declare it, it just IS. You are awesome!

I think you did an awesome job. Since I have run a total of 23 miles this YEAR, I am impressed. Agree with the getting old sucks part. Ran a 5mile race on Saturday and am now hobbling due to some strange toe/foot pain. ugh.

I am in awe that you can even run half marathons. I feel the same as Heather after running my 5Ks. And I was curious how you missed your PR, if you were not aware of how close you were or if you just couldn't quite bust it out, but understandably under the circumstances I am amazed at how well you did. Oh and the 10 pounds you lost during training? Bonus!!!

And do I get credit for introducing you to "Go big or go home"? LOL!

Fantastic race! Even if a few secs off your PR.

Congrats on the race, Laura. I'm with you on all the things that make the training hard and yet we put pressure on ourselves to PR anyway. WTF? I guess it is those standards that make us so tough. :) Great run. PR is just around the corner, I'm sure.
