Reading breakthrough

For 12 to 18 months, Nate has been able to sound out words. I thought for sure he would be a super duper early reader like me, but he had no interest or motivation to move forward. If we ask him what a word is, he will sound it out and read it, but he has not shown an interest in reading to himself.

In the last month, he's been spending a lot of time in his room sounding out words. Last week we went to the library and they had all of the BOB books there. I've read tons of reviews that these books are the shizz for new readers, but being hesitant to pour any more money down the black hole of raising two children, we have not purchased them.

We checked out the entire first series of BOB books, which was bound into one hardback book. By the end of the first night, Nate had read the entire thing out loud to me and Alex. He continued to read to Alex after they went to bed. When he woke up the next morning, he ran to our room to read more stories.

Just like that, he's reading. It's like every other milestone with him. One day crawling, the next taking 100 steps. One day in diapers, the next day trained himself. He's so incredibly proud too, wanting us to take pictures and videos of his reading:

Reading

I can't wait to see that light bulb go on for Alex.

I don't care if it was for the grandparents, I watched the video. Super awesome! I love that he's one of those kids who waits until he's 100% sure he can do something before he does it, but when he does BAM!

Michael has all of the pieces of reading down, he's just lacking the final spark of putting them together. I cannot wait until it hits.

Congratulations! That must be so exciting and "proudening", if I may say so, hehe. I remember how I felt when the girls started to work on feeding themselves with spoons - they threw such an effort at it and looked so grown up!

I was an early reader too, at about 3 or 4, and my mom does not remember really teaching me, just reading together and one day I was doing it alone. There was no preschool for me, I only went when I was 8.

YAY Nate! What a great accomplishment. I watched the video too. I love to hear kids read to themselves.

Awesome! It's so funny, I started reading your post and I was like, I have to tell her about BOB books! We've been through the 2 sight words boxes, and Set 1 and are now on Set 2 (or 3, I lost track). J also read one whole box in one night. We tell them they are books that only kids can read =) And they get such a sense of accomplishment out of them!

Oh my gosh, YEA NATE!!! Wow! I am super impressed. I watched the video, too. Of course I did!

I'm also excited because JTC usually hits milestones between N and A, so maybe he'll flip the switch soon? Will have to look for those books.

I just saw those Bob Books at the book store the other day and thought they looked cool. Irving library, here we come!

woohooo great work! Also, thanks for the recommendation on the books.....there are soo many products out there it's hard to know what the kids will actually like and what level they have to be at to use them. I love when I can read other people's recommendations :)

Yay! It's so amazing to watch kids process information and learn. Especially when he is excited about it himself.

Great job!!! Cam loves books and is trying to learn to read too. I was looking at the BOB's books the other day. He loves the Hooked on Phonics set and I thought he might like them too. FYI there is a IPod/IPhone BOB app. Cam loves it.

AWESOME!

Mel was first to sound out words, but Jessica's been the first to be interested in real reading. I think Mel had a lightbulb moment this week. We'll see.

I'd never even heard of the BOB books. Methinks some Paperswap.com hunting is in my near future.

Of course our sucky library didn't have the BOB books so I got them for Jake in a set from Sam's Club. Love them! Jadyn so wants to learn to read but she will not take direction from me at all so either she is going to have to back down and let me help her or I will have to rely soley on her Leapster Tag. Or school. Whichever comes first.

But I digress. Congrats Nate! Reading is one of the super fun and proud parent milestones.

Yay, Nate! That's totally awesome. He's so adorable in the video.

Cole has no interest in reading, but he's like Nate in that he does something all of a sudden. One day he'll do it, but I'm guessing it won't be for several years.

I'm glad those BOB books are working. We have some of the Brand New Reader books, but I think they are useless for Cole. He memorizes books after hearing them once, even much longer books. So, he "reads" them by memory.

Woot! Woot! That is so awesome. I can't wait to watch the video on the computer (won't show up on my iPhone!). Big congrats to Nate and y'all. And I can't wait to check out those books for A and O.

Way to go Nate! That has to be exciting as a mom. I have one who is starting to ask a lot of questions (what letter does such-n-such start with, how do you spell such-n-such). Trying not to force it but I was super excited with that. I can't even begin to imagine how it feels to have the sound out the words and actually read to you! LOved the video...super cute!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a huge milestone! So exciting. We're not there yet, of course, but it's fun to hear the kids start working on letter sounds, and Daniel sort of "pretends" to sound out words sometimes, which I love.

YAY for a reader!!

Hi Laura

Just wanted to say 'Hello' - I am new to your blog but have spent the better part of the day reading through some of your older posts! I am 25 weeks pregnant with twin boys so was interesting to read your perspective back when you were pregnant with your twins! Congrats on two beautiful boys by the way :-)

Awesome!

Batman's reading program has little books to read too, but I'm always looking for other things for him to read. I will have to check these bob books out. Since THE Laura Case said they were the SHIZZ.
