I hope that I never see, another picture book that rhymes crazily

Do you know what my house is like when we read books? We make the boys raise their hands to ask questions when reading books together because otherwise it will take us approximately 5,o83 minutes to read one book.

I love the four year old mind but dang how do you have so many questions when you've heard this book 5,973,573 times before???

Monday night I had finally had enough of picture books and kiddie stories and decided to read the boys a "real" book from our bookshelf. The problem? Jon and I are not book keepers. We only keep books if it is a book we will read over and over. Mostly we get books at the library because they are free. Also because they are FREE.

As I perused our bookcases, it became apparent how wildly inappropriate our "keeper" books are for small children. Here are some choices that immediately made me laugh:
  • Lolita. It does involve a young girl and a road trip.
  • The Shining. Maybe they would like the twins?
  • Me Talk Pretty One Day. Lots of good Raleigh stories in there.
  • Brave New World. They like futuristic Star Wars so maybe another futuristic novel?
In our bookcases I found one, yes ONE, book appropriate for the boys.

The boys absolutely loved it. We had so much fun answering the questions and coming up with crazy answers. And I had a nice break from kiddie picture books.

PS. As a former Chicago resident and as someone who currently telecommutes for a Chicago company, this story about people stranded on Lake Shore Drive means Chicago people can NEVER mock southern ice storms where people get stuck.

We love those books! We also love 'The Horrible Book of Questions' although that one is wildly inappropriate for children.

I picked up The Shining when I was in 4th grade and immediately put away the copy of Great Expectations my teacher had thrust upon me. Mr. King was my first *favorite* author, and since The Shining was his first book I ever read, it holds a special (albeit creepy) place in my heart. Also, my favorite scary movie of all time (the Kubrick adaptation, of course!).

I have been so so happy reading 'real' books to Nina lately. At least now when she starts asking questions, I know she's been paying attention to the story. I'm so tempted to read her something by Heinlen.

Also, you've seen how many books I have . . . I'm a fervent re-reader, but I also get books from our library at least once a week.

We have a bunch of those books too. Andy and I have done them, but it never even crossed my mind to do it with Michael.

I can fully understand why you have to have the boys raise their hands for story time. Just dealing with Michael during story time is crazy enough. And boy, kids ask some weird questions, don't they?

Totally going to rent that book! Library = one of my best friends. And I LOVED Me Talk Pretty One Day. I just read it last month, and it was awesome!

Don't worry. Those of us in Chicago think those stuck on LSD last night were complete idiots too. It's not like we didn't have days and days of warnings. The storm came in within 15 minutes of the predicted time. And, who drives LSD in a storm? Of course, the people who abandoned their cars should be tied up on Oak Street each for a few days. They just made the problem so much worse. "Who cares if I block traffic and add to the mes? It's more important for me to get out of here. I think the best way is to leave my car on the road and walk a mile or so in the storm." Come to think of it, they are all IDIOTS!

PERFECT! Sometimes the questions are unending...

Lake Shore Drive looked horrendous! I cannot imagine a scenario where I would just leave my car b/c walking would be quicker and less hazardous.

I love the "IF' book. Actually, I brought it on my first camping trip with Sam! I worried that we'd run out of things to say and that this would be a good ice breaker. needless to say 11 years later, we are still asking each other questions. Great post!

That is awesome! We have countless books and the girls often play bookstore. Swoon. I have this book as well and haven't read it for years. Dan and I have been doing a stay at home date night and I will put this in the rotation for the next date night ... and for fun with the girls. Great idea! Oh, and I make the girls read to me now. : ) 5 rocks.
