This regularly scheduled Show Me the Mommy interrupted by a splinter (and a contest)

Hey remember the last time one of the boys had a splinter?

Alex got a splinter on his middle finger at school yesterday and completely lost his shizz. They could not calm him down so they called us for reinforcements. He had calmed down when Jon got there as they decided to leave the splinter in.

Jon and I got the splinter out last night. Let me share some highlights of the experience:
  • 45 minutes of Alex screaming and kicking uncontrollably.
  • Jon pinned Alex to the ground while I (tried to) forced his hand open. Screaming every time I touched it or came close with tweezers.
  • Screams of "Please stop doing that!" "You are killing me!" "I am so scared!"
  • Me and Jon asking Nate for help, only for Nate to say it was too loud and he was going downstairs.
  • Alex screaming so loud directly into my right ear that I took out my hearing aid.
Over a splinter.

It was literally one of the sweatiest, harrowing experiences with a kid we've ever had. Sometimes we would stop and laugh. Sometimes we would stop and yell. Sometimes we would stop and hug Alex to try to calm him down. He was completely out of control. We even tried bribing him with any toy at Target (even the Lego at at!) and he said he didn't want anything. It was baaaaaaad.

It reminded me of our swine flu experience last fall where we were declared the worst vaccination experience by a nurse.

So I didn't have time to take any pictures of me with the boys since I was 30 minutes late to book group.

***************** DECEMBER PHOTO CONTEST ***********************

I have decided to have a photo contest around Show Me the Mommy. In the month of December, on Fridays post your own Show Me the Mommy and link it here. I will pick my favorite mommy photo and the winner will get a Starbucks gift card. Completely subjective, picked by me.

There may be more than one winner. Winner(s) to be announced at the end of December.

Oh man--that sucks. We got off very easy when William had a splinter in the heel of his foot. It wasn't causing him pain and it wasn't red or swollen, so the nurse said we could leave it there, but just to watch it closely. About a month later, it finally worked its way out during a bath. Had we been forced to remove it, I think it would have require anesthesia! So I can completely relate.

As for the contest, nice! Incentive to consciously put myself in front of the camera. Love it!

Youch on the splinter. That sounds like quite an experience. Once they get all worked up like that, there is no bringing them down.

I recently got a splinter deep in my foot. Bill brought home a syringe of lidocaine and holy hell that HURT. I probably should have let him dig it out without anesthesia. Either way, I cannot imagine the theatrics if it had happened to Lana instead of me.

Hoo boy. BTDT. Little boys can be such weenies sometimes :-P

In Alex's defense though - I very distinctly recall an incident when I was in kindegarten (5yrs old) and feel on the playground and somehow a piece of gravel went under the skin on the palm of my hand. My parents had to lay on top of me and wrestle my hand open in order to dig it out. I remember completely freaking out and really being scared about them digging in my hand for some unknown reason. It's a very vivid memory. Probably is for my mom, too, 30 years later LOL.

Wow, we had th EXACT same splinter experience with Eli this summer. We also had moments of laughter over his hysterics followed by feeling awful that he was SO terrified. Ugh, the joys of parenting. :)

I have been taking show me the Mommy pics and I never remember to post them. Maybe I will get it together for the contest. BTW Thanks for giving me the idea to get in more pics even though I feel less than stellar about my current "look" I know someday my little stinkers will want to know what I looked like WAY back then.

When my cousin Caroline was maybe 4 or 5 years old, I remember her getting a splinter (a metal one, ouch!) when we were at the lake one summer. I will never, EVER forget that it took two of my aunts sitting on top of her for my other aunt (an RN) to get it out. Holy crap.

Oh, man...we had a splinter incident and it was VERY similar. Little boys are so dramatic! Off to check out the contest...sounds like something I can get into!

I am in this time!

Splinters are SO not fun. Our little girl handles splinter removal just fine...her twin brother, not so much!

I'll come out of lurkdom and play along, even if I'm a day late. :)

Best part of that whole story is Nate's reaction. :-)
