Aspirations of my four year olds

On the walk home from the pool last night, the boys asked about kindergarten and what comes after it. This led to a long conversation about 13 years of school then college. Nate asked why people go to college and I told him they go there if they want to become a doctor or a lawyer or computer workers like mom and dad. (Notice I did not mention mime school.) Both boys decided they want to be doctors.

We talked about the different kinds of doctors. Brain doctors, eye doctors, dentists, ear doctors, heart doctors, butt doctors. Alex said he wanted to be a brain doctor but when I told him that meant he had to drill into brains and sew heads back up, he decided he wants to be a pediatrician instead. Nate said he wanted to be a butt doctor but when I told him that meant he had to look at butts and poop all day, he decided he wanted to be a pediatrician as well. They were both VERY interested in giving shots to kids and making them cry.

I love four. I think this age suits me best as a parent so far. I love the inquisitiveness, the understanding, the conversations, and the light bulbs you see go on for them.

Then we talked about ear doctors and how I lost my hearing and they cut into my ear and put a metal thing in there to make me hear again. Alex pointed at my earring and said, "Is this what they put in your ear?" Stapedectomy explanation FAIL.

Nice comeback on the types of Drs.

Ben has been playing doctor to baby Ian giving him lots of shots after the tag team double Peds visit/shots of late.

Last night Ben decided that all shots must go in the top of the head. Ouch!

Happy 4th and enjoy the fireworks.

Awesome story! I love the explanations and the things understood and fails. I was trying to explain adoption the other day and why some mommies adopt babies but we somehow ended up with "and then do those mommies hurt in their bellies when they eat?" We can only keep trying =)

Weird, I also got into a conversation with Michael about college last night, even mentioning that there are 12 years of school after kindergarten. How strange that it came up on the exact same night.

Of course, Michael insists that he will be a paleontologist, so any discussion about other possibilities is shut down immediately. He has also decided that I will become a paleontologist as well.

Still, preferable to being a butt doctor.

You literally made me laugh out loud with this post. Glad to see that your kids are interested in working in healthcare...are you prepared for the massive education expense? :-)

LOL! Four has been my favorite age too. You can really talk to them at this age. Although, my girls don't have quite the samee aspirations as your boys. A. wants to be a princess and R. is trying to choose between cowgirl and doctor.

This is hilarious. Four is a great age. As my oldest grew I kept saying whatever age she was had to be my favorite year. Until she hit 11. Then the tween attitude hit. Payback is a B!

I love this age too. The wheels turning, the innocence, the simple logic combined with surprisingly complex insight. The hilarious laughter when something is just SO funny. Its great.

Love this post! Although I must admit I'm a little disappointed you didn't even float the idea of an ANIMAL doctor:-P My mom swears that I said I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was 4 years old, so you never know...
