A twin graduation

This weekend we flew to Ohio to see my first cousins (twins!) Kyle and Kara graduate from high school. I didn't mention it before because hello, we were leaving our house empty for three days.

(I'm sure they think that photo is cheesy so here's a normal graduation picture)

Jon and I talk quite a bit about our long term financial plan for dealing with two kids starting college at the same time. At graduation, both Kyle and Kara learned they won scholarships. I said to Jon - DUDE! we totally forgot about scholarships in the plan! Seeing my aunt Rose's and uncle Brian's faces when they learned about the scholarships, I TOTALLY understood the excitement because seriously, twins are expensive. No reusing stuff, no hand me downs, two in diapers, two in formula, two in day care. It was great to see the light at the end of the very long financial tunnel.

We got to see oodles and oodles of family. My grandma, dad, uncle, aunts, cousins. Here's a four generation picture of my grandma, my dad, me, and the boys. That's the best face we got out of Alex.

My grandma and aunts worked their butts off to pull off a successful family weekend and graduation party. I love hearing the sisters give each other crap as they work, makes me wish Jamie and I lived closer.

Overall we had a great easy trip. The kids were awesome travelers. We spent a lot of time hanging out with family. And we had lots and lots of amazing desserts (I think a sweet tooth is in the Verhoff genes).

Our hotel was right next to wetlands with these huge plants. I had grand plans to take pictures of the boys in front of it, but the attempts turned into a fun wrestling game where there might have been some crying involved. Instead I'll have to give a shout out to Jon for being my model and endlessly watching the kids all weekend so I could chat with family.

I figure scholarships are just bonus money, you can never count on them so you have to plan as if they don't exist.

As far as sending twins to college, when I was in high school, one of my friends had a set of triplet sisters that were one year younger than him. Ouch. 4 kids in college at the same time. The girls were all at the top of their class, so I hope they pulled it off.

And dude, you look so much like your dad.

I love the 4 generation photo--that is something special indeed!

Twins in college? Ouch. Can we all even imagine the cost of college by the time our kids get there? Its going to be crazy.

Glad you had a great trip :)

When we opened Michael's 529 account 3 years ago, the advisor estimated it would cost $103,000 for 4 years at USC (south Carolina), including room and board but not books. Seems crazy, doesn't it??

What a great, great weekend. And how exciting about the scholarships. Not only a relief but how proud must their parents be?

We always talk about how to pay for college. We'll want to retire just when our twins go to college -- or close enough anyway.

I only hope we can help the kids with college. Two was quite a shock and I responded much like my dad would have, "well, that's gonna cost a lot." The laughter and joy is worth it all.

Fun!
Yeah, we're already strategizing on the college front. Just sent forms in for both girls to have British passports, hoping the dual citizen thing will mean they can go to college in England (like their dad and I did) and score the super reasonable Brit citizen rate.
