Our laundry day just got longer

One of the VERY BEST things about having same gender same size twins is that you get double the kids with half the laundry. We do the adult laundry as we have always done - one basket for darks, one basket for lights/whites, towels and sheets separate. When the boys were born, we added an extra basket for the boys' clothes. Yes, we wash everything of theirs together on cold. No, nothing has ever gotten ruined. Whenever a basket is full, we do a load. The boys share everything so it all goes into one closet and one dresser. Laundry has never seemed like the daunting task I hear about from other parents.

It's pretty fun that Lindsay was here to witness the story I am about to tell!

I was rushing to complete laundry on Friday before getting Lindsay at the airport so I dumped the boys' clothes together with our darks. Jon switched the laundry to the dryer then took it out to fold it and found Alex had left a red crayon in his pocket. Red crayon all over the dryer, their clothes, and our clothes.

Through sheer dumb luck, the only things of ours that got red crayon on them were workout clothes and a pillowcase. Three things were learned from this experience:

1. We will never wash their clothes with our clothes again.

2. It's time to start checking pockets every time we do laundry. Boo because that will add more time.

3. I have the world's awesomest husband, who rewashed the clothes and pulled out the things that got crayon on them with no prompting from me. All of this, again, evidenced by Lindsay. Yay to gender equality!

I hear people complain about their husbands all the time and when they look to me to add to the tales of misery, I always say "I got an awesome one." Sure, there are things that I do complain about, but my husband is amazing. I'm glad to hear someone else has one of the cool husbands, too!!

I was so impressed with everything Jon did by his own initiative. Bryan will do stuff if I ask, but I always have to ask.

Am still going to blog! This week has been Capital-C Crazy.

Oh man--red crayon is the worst! I have to watch out for stickers. I forget to pull them off clothes, and if they get in the dryer, forget it!

I don't sort for color because I wash everything in cold. (Except for sheets and pillowcases, which get washed in hot.) But I tend to wash everyone's stuff separately because that's just how they end up in the laundry baskets. Plus, I do NOT let Ed do my laundry or the kids'. He will do his own from time to time, but he never checks for stains and there are some things I like to air dry. It suits the control-freak in me just fine! LOL.

Michael's clothes don't add that much to our laundry, but when you add in our work out clothes as well, it really does add up. Andy and I tag team laundry on Sunday's and it pretty much does come out 50/50 on effort.

Having a super Lazy MIL has one advantage, Andy was already used to doing his own laundry and cleaning before he even met me. I'm glad that Jon handles that stuff too.

OMG, Joanna's MIL comment cracks me up. Maybe b/c my MIL had the opposite effect.

Jon does rock!

Since having Jr. laundry has become much more of a chore - we also have always washed J's clothes in one big load with no problems. However due to his eczema problems I use a different detergent for Jr. so his stuff is yet another separate load. I also have to separate my work clothes from everyone else's because of the icky stuff I run into on a regular basis at work. So we have darks, lights/whites, sheets & towels, my regular work stuff, my scrubs/lab coats, J's clothes, Jr.'s clothes...you see why it's a hassle.

And we learned the hard way a couple years ago ("washable" markers, HA!) to check all pockets LOL. At least J likes to help me, he knows how to sort and he likes to transfer all of the clothes in/out of the washer and dryer.

We do laundry every day, but that is because we cloth diaper. Sometimes we wash the boys' clothes with our but usually we do a load of their stuff by itself.

I also check pockets and turn things either inside out or right side out (depending on what it is) as I put it in the laundry basket. That way when one of us throws the laundry in we don't have to wonder.

And I also don't understand the laundry comments that so many other people make. We even have the added loads of diapers and I am still not swamped in clothes. Of course, my husband is a champ and helps out tons around the house so maybe that makes a difference.

Hubby is good about washing clothes and keeping most whites and colored clothes separate, but I don't know about putting it back in the washer without prompting! I think he might say: "Oops! HT, I need your help!"

Anyway we do the same with our girls. All their clothes are washed separately from ours. We also keep the towels and bedding separate.

Then there is the steam only stuff.

I keep the dish cloths and "food stuff" away from the rest of the washing as well.

Come to think of it I might be a little OCD about cleanliness.

I usually do the kids clothes separately, except their whites go in with ours. However, like you I was rushing to finish and had enough for one last load if I combined them, forgetting that I had confiscated a tiny bottle of nail polish from Faith, and stuck it in my pocket. And then I washed and dried it. Everything that was inside out was salvageable. My new exercise pants and Jay's khakis? Not so much.

Oh boy! My son is just getting to the age of wanting to carry little things around with him and discovering his pockets, but so far we've been lucky that they haven't involved anything that will stain! We, too, do his laundry separate from ours and wash it all together on cold. Wonder what will happen to my laundry days when our second is born in the next month... anyway, thanks for reminding me to be on the lookout for red crayons!
