Alex spent two hours at the pool yesterday jumping off the starting blocks into the deep end.
After diving in, he swam ON HIS OWN an entire half length of the pool. Many times.
Turns out, he's a stronger swimmer than Nate. He just needed some time to feel confident. (Nate did the same thing but he kept trying to talk to me when coming up for air, thus losing momentum.)
It's only June and both my boys are swimming on their own. Can I tell you how glad I am that we do not need to shell out money (AND TIME!!!) for swim lessons this year?!

Yay Alex! Yay Nate.
Thank goodness for no swim lessons. Just today D and I were saying we need to start ours this summer (Oct - Nov). When did you start N & A with theirs? At what age?
Love the new look :) they do have some lovely new templates, don't they?
I'm addicted to blog design now - I found a fabulous designer (see this blog http://organizeyourbaby.com and I'm getting her to do everything in sight!)
Rock on Alex! That is awesome. Can't wait for William to see your boys swimming. I was hugely encouraged by yesterday's success in our pool!
Woohoo!!
I'll say it - SUCK IT swim team! Shame on you and your time lines! Yay for Alex being an awesome swimmer!
Incredible! We were in our neighbor's pool for the first time and my daughter can swim all of about 3 inches on her own. I'm hoping by the end of the summer she can jump off the diving board and swim to the side by herself.
I'll add a bite my butt to Maria's suck it.
I am glad to hear they are both swimming, and no swim team and no lessons will free up lots of time for lots of goofing around. I'm all for goofing around.
LOL about Nate's talking interfering with his swimming. I know way more about that phenomenon than I would like.
That's awesome! Michael is taking swimming lessons at our pool this week and today he swam for the first time by himself. And he did it repeatedly....I was so happy (and proud).
May you enjoy a summer at the pool while everyone else is at swim team!
Great job Alex! Too funny about Nate talking so much he was losing momentum. Even without swim team, you are going to have an awesome summer at the pool. They can still suck it though.
I just showed Lana the video of Nate jumping off the diving board in an effort to motivate her to try swim lessons. Although she was impressed, she did not agree to the lessons. Maybe next year.
WOW! That's a long way to come from sitting and watching!
I don't have great expectations for JTC (swim lessons start next week), but we'll see. I'd love for him to be able to jump off the side!
Glad to hear they're swimming so well on their own! I think you're at the perfect place for no lessons - comfortable and capable in the water, but still plenty young to just play and build skills on their own before bothering with anything formal.
Hooray for summer!
We signed my kids up for lessons - a full week of them next week (with me, oh joy), and then four weeks of two days a week in August (without me, yay!). Hoping they won't freak out with the teacher and will learn how to submerge. We'll see!
soo jealous...parker is so fearless in the water it's scary- fearless+no swimming=almost drowning. all. the. time. we're in the midst of lessons but they're not going so well...he doesn't want to be without fin (who's not ready to be in level 2 yet). ahh, the joys of twins. congrats to two swimming boys!
Someone put in their status the difference between try and triumph is umph. It sounds like both your boys have umph!
I'm so amazed by this! Cole will not leave the steps of the pool or do anything that involves possibly getting water on his face or hair. Your boys are so brave!
Swim team personnel=so short-sighted! Yay!
Stupid swim team.
Smart boys.
Good mama.
