The best present ever (and 500 in 2010)

Every year Santa brings just a few presents to the boys but he always brings one large gift. All of the large Santa gifts are still in use - Pottery Barn anywhere chairs, play kitchen, Skuut bikes. This year Santa brought a bigger table for the play room and it has seen heavy amounts of use.

Even though Santa did a great job with presents, the boys have a new absolutely all-time favorite toy: travel backpacks. We have two flights this month and one of them will be me taking the boys solo cross-country. After seeing Goddess' kids with cute backpacks, I realized the boys are old enough to cart some of their own stuff.

Nate helped me pick out backpacks at Target over the weekend. He was so excited about the backpacks that turn into wheelie bags that I couldn't talk him into a regular backpack. Since bringing them home, the boys have played with nothing else. They pack things up in them, take "flights" together in their bedroom, and wear them while doing artwork. Last night they spent an hour in Nate's room playing airport and wanted nothing to do with adult interaction.

Let's hope they are this excited about the backpacks after I make them be their own pack mules on two long flights.

PS. Erin and I are racing to see who can run 500 miles first in 2010. We set up an open invitation for anyone to join us running, walking, elliptical machine, biking. So far 30 people have signed up! Details on my other blog here.

Don't you just love which things they latch on to? My kids were fighting over a reuseable coffee-cup holder that I got as a stocking stuffer from my dad. They were drinking their milk with it. Weirdos!

Looking forward to hearing about the rolling backpacks in the airport!

You mean eventually they carry their own stuff?!? That sounds heavenly :-)

How cute! And total bonus that the backpacks resulted in independent play. Seth and William are starting to have more and more of those "play together" moments, where they are talking and interacting only with each other. It's so awesome!

My kids are OBSESSED with their backpacks too. It's lovely. They don't even know they are helping, they just think they are having fun!

Best Present EVER!

Think N & A could stage a full on pat down and body search just for fun? Somehow the 3.5 year old version just seems funny.

I finally had to put a stop to back packs as toys. My girls love using their backpacks but there are certain things they need to keep in them for preschool (like a change of clothes) and I was concerned they would take everything out and I'd never find it. I did find little dolls that come with mini backpacks and that seems to have appeased them. They wear the mini packs all the time!

Too funny! I was thinking about getting my girls backpacks after seeing Goddess' kids with them too!

Does their airport play involve stopping at Starbucks for a pre-flight latte?

I'm really curious about the bikes. I just learned about balance bikes from another twin blog about a week ago. How old were the boys when they got them? Did they have trikes prior to them? How long to do you expect them to use them or what convinced you to buy them?

Cooper has a backpack he picked out for preschool. Do you think I can get him to carry it at all? No. Not sure why, most kids think that's the greatest. Not him. He has his own suitcase (pottery barn clearance, totally awesome) that he likes to pack, but doesn't like to carry through the airport. He needs to take some tips from N&A!

Ada got a kid sized backpack when she was 3 and loved it. She also did a lot of airplane play, some of it inspired by my mom, who played it with her non-stop on one visit a year ago.

Just be sure that you or Nate oversees the packing of the backpack. If Ada had her way, she would carry on scraps of paper, a toy teapot, some broken crayons and buttons...

Katie has been giving us so much trouble getting dressed that we had to do something. She screams and cries and insists that she needs us to be with her and help her get dressed, go to the potty, etc. We instituted a timer rule recently. If she gets her clothes on before the timer goes off, she gets to watch tv before breakfast while Daddy is getting ready. Of course, this morning, she went to the potty and so didn't get dressed before the timer went off. We had several minutes of hysterics about not making it in time while I tried to explain that she had an extra minute because she went to the potty. Have to give her enough time!

The girls have their own set of luggage. They love to pull out the carry on bags, pack random things in them, and then roll them around the house saying, "We're going on vacation!" A year later and it still hasn't gotten old for them.
