We made tons of hot chocolate with piles of whipped cream. We decorated every surface of the house that could be decorated. We bought a gingerbread house kit from Trader Joe's. And after the pain and anger and disappointment of trying to get the stupidass gingerbread house to not fall down and to look even remotely nice, we said NEVER AGAIN. When Christmas was over, we smashed that gingerbread house with a mallet and took pictures.
But oh my goodness, the children! The boys are so entirely excited about Christmas, in the most beautiful innocent wide-eyed way. Every day they are bursting with enthusiasm over this holiday season. We've been trying to do something festive every day. And so it was that I was at Target over the weekend and saw something so magical: a pre-fabricated gingerbread house. Just frost the outside and stick on your candies.

No cursing, no swearing. Just sheer excitement from the boys.

I think we'll keep this as a tradition since the boys love seeing the house every day. And we have already decided to keep the Case Family tradition of smashing that thing after Christmas.
Tis the season!

Love IT! If Ben's class were not making them I might, BIG MIGHT try it again. But since we had more fun smashing and trashing the train I thin I got my 9.99 worth.
Seriously, 25 3-5 year olds kids making REAL houses, they are nuts!
I went with the rice crispy house this year. I'm not up to trying the gingerbread house again after the mess I made a few years ago.
You know, I normally think that Alex looks more like Jon, but in that last picture I can really see you in it. Not so much in his looks, but in the face he is making while he works. I think that is my favorite face to see on a kid.
Hi, I looks like we might have the same gingerbreak house you are working on. We will be working on it this weekend! Will see how it goes. This will be our first time doing something like this.
We have it in a box just waiting to make it. I think today will be the day we make it. I know the kids have been looking forward to it.
I'm really looking forward to adding traditions like this as my twins get older. Good to know they have a gingerbread house kit to make it nice and easy. Looks like a lot of fun!
One of my other friends just recommended the same gingerbread house from Target. We are doing it as a project this weekend. I think we might have to try smashing it afterwards. That sounds equally fun.
Awesome! I signed up to help William's class of 14 3-year-olds make "gingerbread" houses next Friday. Should be fun, huh? We're making pre-fabricated houses out of pint-sized milk cartons and graham crackers. But the "pre-fabricated" part of is key. :-) And LOL about you and Jon and the live tree. I'm very lucky that my Jewish husband will put the tree in the stand every year. He bitches the whole time, but he does it!
My gingerbread houses are My Thing(TM). They're the holiday tradition that I hope the girls look back on and remember me by when I'm gone. I make mine from scratch, assemble it while the girls are asleep, and usually make more than one. Two years ago, for instance, I made four gingerbread houses and gave them to friends, along with decorating supplies, as gifts.
Last year, Lucas was home for gingerbread house time, and I have to say that a second pair of hands made assembly much faster, although we still used a pair of soup cans to hold the walls up while they dried.
Laura, you don't get to call yourself a non-crafty mom after you show these pics online. The house looks awesome. I am off to Target per your reco!
PS LOVE the pic of the boys in both B&W and color. Make sure to buy copies for the grandparents.
