We had not locked the gate since Christmas break, so it was time to come down. For now, we have kept the gate at the bottom of the stairs as it is retractable and it is nice to have the option to corral kiddos downstairs, particularly when friends come over.
There are many bittersweet moments of having twins, as phases pass by once in a lifetime. Taking off the stupid gate is so so so sweet with not a touch of bitter. I love unbabyproofing the house as much as I hated twinproofing it.

Also finished: My fear of Nate and Alex going under the water at the pool. Last night we brought some toy rockets that sink to the bottom. Nate immediately started diving to grab them off the bottom. Alex did the same thing by the end of our trip. I can't believe how quickly they are learning to hold their breath for longer and longer periods. Time to let go of my fear.

Wow. I can't believe that about the swimming. My girls won't even put their face in.
As someone who lived for years in a "gated community" I can really appreciate the milestone of removing that one. Way to go! Another exciting step is finally taking all those drawer stoppers off the cabinets in the bathroom.
Also good job with the pool! I wish I had worked with mine more when they were younger. They're good swimmers now, but not very brave when they started.
I hate, hate, hate baby gates. It must have felt so good to have taken that one down.
As far as the swimming. I'm not surprised. It's so much easier for kids to learn to swim. They are just such little fish.
Ugh....I dislike baby gates as well and I have teens now so you would think we were way way way done with them. Nope. Enter puppyhood ;)
Your post made me realize that my parents still have some of the child-proof items in their house from when my brother was a baby (he's turning 21 in August). Congrats on getting the gate out!
I learned how to swim in the above ground pool my parents bought when we were kids. My dad was an over the road trucker and he would save his change for tolls and such in an empty milk jug. When he came home for the weekends in the summertime he would dump his milk jug FULL of his extra change in the pool. Whatever we kids came up with we got to keep. Taught us how to not only hold our breathe longer but also how to swim. Of course my sister would beat me up and take my change...but I digress!
I can't even imagine a home without gates. I am so jealous! Enjoy :-)
I am so very jealous of you getting to remove the gates! While I am used to them, they still drive me nuts!
Awww, they're getting so big! They're going to be asking for the car keys next week ;) Heehee. Congrats on the milestone!
