Why I love our video monitor

About 30 minutes after the boys went to bed last night, I heard a lot of commotion over the monitor. It clearly sounded like fighting but I didn't worry too much because they know they are not supposed to get out of their beds. We're working on getting the boys to work out minor differences on their own instead of running to us to tattle on everything, so I was hoping to leave them alone. As the shouting (and giggling) escalated, I decided to turn on the video monitor to determine whether I needed to go in or not.

After the screen came on, I could see Nate lying in bed with Alex. Nate would pretend to do something to Alex, Alex would giggle hysterically, then Nate would shout at Alex for laughing. Alex would shout back, which would make Nate do something (couldn't quite see over the monitor), which would make Alex laugh again, which would make Nate yell, which would make Alex yell. Over and over.

I ran to Jon and told him to come watch the monitor. We stood there giggling watching the entire thing unfold. Nate kept getting so angry at Alex but HELLO NATE you are in Alex's bed! And it's a toddler bed so it's not like it's a big bed! I don't know whether Jon and I were more surprised that they were in bed together (thus flaunting our "don't get out of bed" rule) or that Nate was voluntarily playing with Alex. Finally they started playing a game called "eat you" where they would try to bite each other, at which point I had to go in and break things up.

All night I wondered how often they have been getting out of their beds without us knowing it. And as much as I loved watching them play on the video monitor, I think we need to let them have this space to play together alone so the monitor will stay off.

Obviously though, we now know if we hear "no eat me!" it means it's time to turn on the video monitor.

That would be so handy to have ... and good for you for letting them be kids. We need to do that more in our house. Still, my girls are pretty much at a stage where they don't want to be touched by the other one. Girls!

That is so cute to get a glimpse into "their" playtime together! Love that friendship that is already so strong.

Turn off the monitor? Dude, I'd be getting popcorn and pulling up a chair. That sounds like the bets show on TV!

(Of course, if it were my kids I'd be doing the same thing you are, but since it's not, I'd watch.)

Now I'm wishing we'd invested in a video monitor. My girls were EXHAUSTED this morning from having stayed up until 9:30 talking.

I LOVE our video monitor. Of course, I kids don't do much yet (5 months old...) but I know we will get to see all those cute little things.

You have inspired Jared and I to purchase a video monitor if we EVER graduate the boys from their cribs. We are also taking your advice to wait as long as possible for that.

Great post!
Just curious, how old were Nate & Alex when you moved them to toddler beds? It makes my stomach turn just thinking about it! The anticipation is the worst right?!?!
