Sometimes it feels SO GOOD to be SO RIGHT

Nate has been on a mad licking phase. He licks things on purpose - tables, walls, umbrella poles. It is maddening. What is the point of all this hand washing if he's going to turn around and lick the floor?! He knows it drives us crazy so he has started to lick things while singing, "I'm licking! I'm licking! Licking licking licking."

(Smart, that one is.)

Between Alex's spitting, Nate's licking, Alex's nose picking, and Nate's loud talking about potty habits... UGH. Our house can be gross. We've tried very patiently to explain to Nate he can get sick or hurt if he licks things. Last night at bedtime, the boys unplugged their Moby Tykelights and Nate licked the Moby plug. You know, the plug that plugs into the wall into the ELECTRICAL SOCKET with live electricity.

He yelled, "Ouch! That hurt!" and I said with the smuggest I'm-the-mom-and-I-know-all voice, "That's why you don't lick things. You might get hurt."

IT FELT SO GOOD.

(Then of course I hugged him.)

Oh my god! That is so crazy! I love the all knowing Mom voice. Isn't it awesome? It should come with its own sound track so that when our children hear "the voice", they will know without a doubt that truth is being told. :)

Teachable moments are wonderful. Teachable moments like that? AWESOME!

Ahhh yes, the mother knows best moments. You know, I hate to see my girls get hurt, but sometimes it's the only way to teach them. My recent "mommy moment" was why we shouldn't stand on the back of the couch. After one of them fell no one stands on the back of the couch any more.

I'm hearing the "Ha ha!" from the Simpsons in my head. That is awesome!

Ben is a licker, too, but he licks us :P Arms, shirts, etc. Sadly, it's lasted a while, with it disappearing for just short periods. Hopefully it's gone for good soon!

That would be scary, the whole socket-licking. Sounds like you reacted PERFECTLY though! I don't think Ben will try that — I hope. Mike is an electrician so it's talked about A LOT in the house. When he grows up he is going to be "electrical" ;)

Such wonderful things to look forward to:). My Sofi girl loves to eat wires and I was hoping this would change but maybe it will turn into licking. Oh lucky me:)

I know this sounds a bit mean but I love when I don't have to nag b/c God kind of kicks their little butts for me :) I hope the "Shock" helps him stop licking :)

I don't know if the licking ever ends. I was teaching an electricity unit in a 4th grade, and one of the kids shared the knowledge about how if you lick a battery, you get shocked. You wouldn't believe how many kids tried it (which was extra silly, since it only works with 9V and we were using D's, which don't shock you.

I couldn't believe I had to enact a "no licking batteries" rule for 4th graders :)

Those are the moments I pray for!
(Although What A Card, I tend to like licking batteries, and I'm 44! ;) )

Enjoy the triumph, Laura!

I'm a little late with this - but which one is your mom in the picture you posted?

In my work with oppositional and defiant kids and teenagers and even adults in therapy, I like the paradoxical approach - tell them to do the opposite of what you want - but I'm not sure how that works with 3-year-olds???

Had the same kind of moment today. Told Konnor 800 times to sit down in the back of the cart. He was standing, I turned and he *almost* fell out....His eyes got like saucers and he said "Ha...Oh!!" I said "thats why Ive told you 100 times not to stand up. scary huh. SIT DOWN...." then a few mins later asked if he was ok....LOL
