Nate potty training update #1

When looking back at my blog, I realize I often leave out the details along the way that might have been helpful to other people. How did we deal with Nate's fussiness and reflux? What did we learn in Alex's physical therapy appointments? How did we travel with twin infants, twin toddlers, and solo with twin pre-schoolers? So I thought I'd give an update on how Nate's potty training situation.

He is now 100% pee-trained throughout the day. He wears underwear all day, including naps, but we put him in an overnight pull-up for nighttime. He hasn't had an accident in two weeks and he is very independent with potty use.

Even day care is completely baffled by how quickly this happened. On a Friday, he had never peed at day care and only peed once at home in 10 months of potty awareness/potty sitting. On a Monday, he showed up in underwear all day.

I'd love to say we had some magical method we used. We didn't. The weather was crappy and we asked if he wanted to wear underwear. He said yes and never looked back! My mom said this was how I trained as well.

The only piece of success I can claim is that I bought the ClickStart computer specifically for potty training. We told the boys every time one of them used the potty, they could each play a game. Nate is IN LOVE with computers, and apparently this was enough motivation for him.

We also used sticker charts, which I have read don't really work with 2 year olds because they don't understand delayed gratification. Yet again the experts are wrong because Nate constantly talks about how many more times he needs to pee until he gets his next present. And he proudly shows off the toy he got because he peed 10 times. He also snatches stickers when our backs are turned to inflate his pee count.

We put him in pull-ups if we'll be out of the house for a long time but he won't pee in his pull-ups. Score! So far, this potty training experience has been relatively easy. KNOCK ON WOOD because we still have another boy to train and two major hurdles (#2 and overnight) ahead of us until we can say he is fully trained. And I'll be very interested to see how different it is to train Alex.

For now, my last thought on this topic is that it feels SO EASY to change one kid's diaper after almost three years of having two in diapers!

Clearly, you managed to hit on a sweet spot of readiness! I'm knocking on wood and all of that so nothing gets jinxed. Hooray!

I don't understand (seriously) - you say he isn't #2 trained... what happens when he has to go?

Yay for potty training! It must be so nice to only have to change one set of diapers each day. And, once again, I love seeing how different your boys are in this.

That's awesome. I think when they are ready, it isn't that hard of a concept for them. We did pull-ups overnight for a few months just in case, but discovered that shortly after the progress you've already noticed with Nate, our Alex would stay dry 90% of the time. Occasional nighttime accidents, but usually he wakes up and makes it to the bathroom if he has to. (And we had to be more careful about limiting the after-dinner and teeth-brushing intake of liquids!)

Laura, First, congratulations! It's so great to have one out of diapers.

Two, can I ask for your help? We cannot get our girls (3 1/2) to sleep when they are together in one room, so we have separated and put gates up at night. They have been potty trained during the day for nine months, but they still wear pull-ups at night because of the gates. So, in order to move on to overnight potty training, I have a question about sleeping--how can we get our girls, who are tired at night--to stay in their rooms without gates up? I've tried sitting there and putting them back, but it doesn't seem to be working. I'd appreciate any suggestions!

I LOVE the line, "Stealing stickers to inflate his pee count." Are you kidding me? That is awesome! :) Good for you guys! Hip, hip, hooray!!

I just looked up the Clickstart computer on Amazon and it looks really neat. Congrats! I hope it happens that fast with Nathan!

Thanks for the details. I was actually going to email you and ask what the magic secret was. We are not quite there yet and I'm not pushing or forcing the issue AT ALL so we'll see when it actually happens. I'm curious how different it will be potty training a boy and girl. I am encouraged by your success at doing them separate as that was my first thought since S is way more ready than H.

Wow - you'll be night trained before us. We've been day-trained for a year, but they're still soaking diapers/pull ups at night, so I haven't even bothered.

Jadyn and Liana both became 100 percent pee trained in less than four days -- two weeks ago. They are now in underwear around the clock except for (naps for Liana) bedtime -- and poops. : )

Liana did poop on Friday, though, in the potty. She's a little slower coming around to being done with diapers, but is definitely coming around.

I do not think I did anything. They did it all. I showed them what they needed to do and know and it was up to them to know when the time was right.

It's not really training until they decide to go. We've had only two accidents and those were in the first two days.

Love this!
