March showers bring April flowers

Remember these tiny buds from a couple of weeks ago?

This is the magical surprise hidden inside each of them - a delicate dogwood blossom.

Dogwoods are my favorite flowers of North Carolina spring. Just after dawn and just after dusk, the flowers glow with the fading light. As much as photography can capture, there are some things that must be witnessed in person. Delicate glowing dogwoods, along with children, fall into that category.

While technically our last frost date is April 15, the forecast looked so promising that I put in my garden last week. Six kinds of tomatoes, peppers, leeks, strawberries, spinach, 10 different herbs... this is another practice year to see what does well. While the majority of the garden is netted off to protect it from rabbits, squirrels, and other wildlife, I left plenty of garden open for the boys to help me as we learn to garden together. This is one of "their" tomato plants.

Nate helped me water yesterday (from our very full rain barrel) and I learned the netting will be equally important this summer to keep out much larger animals. Every day it shocks me how much the little things such as watering a garden can be so much better when shared with these little guys.

I remember gardening with my mom when I was little. They are great memories and I'm glad that your boys will have similar ones.

Of course, I also remember eating frozen green beans for years, and years, and years...My mom may have gotten carried away.

I also grew up gardening a lot. Even when we lived in a crappy base housing apartment in Germany my mom still rented a garden plot for us to dig around in.

And green beans, OH the green beans...lol Joanna!

How great to involve them that way. And I'm SO jealous that you are planting things now, as it is so very cold here today and it will be months before we can put tomatoes in the ground!

Nina and I planted 'her' garden a few weeks ago, which is comprised of various greens - kale, spinach, chard, a gazillion lettuces. It is our only raised bed, and is also enclosed with chicken wire to keep the deer and rabbits out. Nina enjoys helping out with the gardens, but mostly she is obsessed with earth worms. She carries them around, kisses them, and tries to put them in her pockets. I just hope she doesn't figure out how many are in our compost bin!

So true! I just told Jared how I love that we get to once again see things through their eyes that are so full of wonder!

Great pics! We are getting some flowers these days too even though its not very warm. We have daffodils, irises, tulips are almost out and I even saw a neighbor's rotadendron blooming! Yay for spring!

Hi Laura :)
Just wanted to let you know that I *borrowed* one of your photos - beautiful dogwood blossoms - to illustrate a poem I posted on my site today.

I hope you dont mind....

and I will take it down, if you want me too.

Thanks for sharing and blessings on you, your cute twin boys, and hubby Jon.
