Good Friday

Jon really hates the smell and taste of vinegar. It's one of those weird things about him. If there is even one drop of vinegar in something, he will not eat it. One memorable CSA we joined in Chicago sent us 30 cucumbers over three weeks. I decided to jar pickles and Jon was forced from the house for hours until the vinegar smell cleared out.

So I thought I was good wifey by finding an egg painting set at Michael's that required no vinegar. Jon and I have decided this was the worst egg coloring idea ever. Alex only wanted the darkest colors. When he held up the egg to show us, it was so slippery it fell on the floor, cracked horrendously, and had to be trashed.

Nate wanted to paint layer after layer on his egg. Every color in the paint tray ended up the same as Nate dipped his brushes and sponges into each little hole. The next night, we were planning to put stickers on the eggs since the boys love stickers right now. The paint still wasn't dry, 24 hours later.

There was a 12-way tie for ugliest egg. But even if the egg paint was a bad idea and the eggs will never win any Beautiful Egg awards, it was still a wonderful experience to share with our boys. And I think the vinegar kits are going to be a staple in our home from now on.

Still on my to-do list: have a talk with the Easter bunny about not hiding these eggs on Sunday. I'm not sure the paint will be dry by then!

We the did the standard Paas dying kit, but I'm pretty sure I read on there that you could use lemon juice instead of vinegar?

I think the painted eggs turned out really pretty, at least from that one picture.

Wow, those are some UGLY eggs. But as long as you all had fun, I'd call it a success.

This is the weirdest thing. When I got home yesterday one of my neighbor's cars was being worked on by emergency services. When I went to talk to her, she said it was the weirdest thing. The night before, she had a dream that her car broke down, and the next day, it did! What are the chances of encountering two people, on the same day, that had dreams come true?

I had a dream that I was in a plan crash, think I should avoid flying?

1. Jon would hate it at my house then, since I use vinegar and water to clean everything (glass, vegetables, fruit, counters) and buy it by the gallons at Costco.

2. Hmmm...you just made me rethink my eye dyeing extravaganza this weekend, which we've been talking up all week. I bought watercolors (as in paints). Good idea or bad? I did by the Paas kit, but wanted to try the water color paints first.

3. You took some sweet photos of the boys and their "ugly" eggs.

P.S.

Edit: "eye" should be "egg"...at least let's hope so!

Your poor table cloth! Its a pretty one too. I actually thought the eggs looked unique in a good way. I love vinegar--salt and vinegar chips are the BEST!

We jut dyed ours tonight and right on the box it said:

"For vibrant colors use 3 tablespoons of vinegar. For regular colors use 3 tablespoons of lemon juice. For pastel colors use 3 tablespoons of water"

SO...Jon could still dye without dying! As long as N&A are "metro" enought to be happy with pastels.

Those eggs look great!

We used lemon juice instead of vinegar and they turned out just fine. However, they were not what I would call "pretty" just bright. I don't think the kids will achieve pretty for a few years.
