Why we did not potty train earlier, by LauraC

Even though Nate has been in underwear only since Saturday morning, he is not ready to be anywhere except home and day care. He sits on the potty about 15 times (no exaggerating here) for each time something happens. Every 10-15 minutes, he thinks he needs to go. At day care, they gave up on writing "T" ("tried") on his sheet after the first morning.

Between the two boys, they own four pairs of shoes. Two pairs of shoes is not going to cut it for potty training. He needs one pair for his feet, one extra pair at school, and extra pairs at home in case of accidents or if any of the above pairs are in the wash.

We needed to go to Target for some backup shoes, yet Nate was clearly not ready to go to Target. And Target is far enough away that we needed to grab some food for everyone on the way.

We went to Chick-fil-A because I knew they had stepstools for kids in the bathrooms. We sat by the bathrooms because we knew it was going to be bad. Nate wanted to go in the potty five times while we ate. Nothing happened.

Then we went to Target. He wanted to go in the potty three times while we were there. Nothing happened. (Fortunately Alex was there as a sizer. I tried shoes on him to narrow down the choices so we could quickly try them on Nate. Twins rule.)

Eight trips to the potty in 90 minutes. At some point, I convinced him to wear a pullup so we could get the shoes and get out of there. He still wouldn't go in his pullup, so he was doing the "need to pee" dance throughout Target.

I don't know what we were thinking trying to do a booty camp with both boys this weekend. Thank you Alex, for refusing and giving us this beautiful gift - only dealing with potty training one kid at a time. And you better believe I bought enough shoes to get Alex through potty training too.

Oh man, I didn't even think about shoes! Thanks for the tip. This post had me LOL! Yet another plus on the side of putting off PTing as long as possible!

Laura, Hysterical! Shoes! I didn't think about shoes either...that is purely boy. Gross! God bless you for doing this not once but twice. At. The. Same. Time. My two days of potty boot camp left me whimpering in a corner. *I* am not ready!

We have not done the potty outside of school and home so I am totally looking into other's solutions since Ben is an undies only boy and pull ups defeat the purpose for him.

So glad you went for the back up shoes. I am telling you even when his pants might be dry his shoes and socks are almost always soaked.

How he does this God only knows. Thinking of calling Cirque Du Soleil and telling them I have a contortionist in training.

I am going to make sure my husband reads this post ASAP! :-) He keeps saying how great potty training will be (he's thinking of the $$ saved). I keep reminding him that he's insane. This post will help to prove my point. haha

LOL. My mom got it into her head that she was going to potty train Michael early in the winter. I just said good luck and waited for her to give up. Now, I'm glad.

Love it! I've never thought about needing extra shoes. Good to know! By the end of this you will know every potty in your area it sounds like!

Finally, I don't feel so alone...When Katie wanted to train (and I did NOT) we went to the bathroom every 5-15 minutes at home. We went to the bathroom 7-10 times between 5:30 and 7:30pm (when we get home from work/school and put her to bed). She refused to get in the bathtub because everytime she got in, she had to pee. Nothing happened at 95% of these trips. When I finally put her in the tub against her protestations, she pooped in the tub and was hysterical. Hurray for Alex, patiently waiting. :)

Oh geez. Funny and terrifying! The whole potty training thing gives me a panic attack. I think I've still got at least a year to go and it will take that long to build up the mental strength needed. You are one patient lady! The shoes thing is hilarious. It reminds me of when I used to work at a high end architecture firm and I'd hear the architects desperately trying to talk parents out of expensive flooring in the bathroom. "No! Not the hardwoods! Boys miss!"

It definitely gets easier. My girls weren't ready at the same time either, and it proved to be a blessing. We did one first, and then eventually the other was ready. That in-between-time where you discover every public bathroom and carry around five extra sets of clothing won't last forever. If it helps, one of my girls peed all over the floor in the children's section at Barnes and Noble when we were training. I was mortified! Luckily they were very nice :)

Laura-
Invest in some crocs, or fake crocs. They are the best shoes for PTing...wipe with a clorox wipe after rinsing...done. Those shoes were our best friends during PTing. The added bonus...the kids can put on and take off alone!

My daughter has been so resistant to potty training that I fear for what this could be like with my twins. I will just have to cross my fingers that when it is time they'll want to be like their (I am assuming by then potty trained) big sister.
