When we lived in Chicago, we had no need for a car so neither of us owned one when we met. After four years of no car, Jon got a job that required a car. He bought our Toyota Corolla and before I was allowed inside, he gave me a list of rules. No greasy food or chocolate in the car. No drinking dark liquids in the car. I had to track the mileage every time I filled up and calculate the MPG.
When he told me all of this, I literally laughed out loud because I thought he was joking. He was not joking. But eventually I wore him down. And when I got pregnant, all bets were off. Because when you carry twins, your husband better let you eat whatever you freaking want in the car.
For five years, we had the Corolla and only the Corolla. We made it three years with twins with one car. We spent a LOT of time together. If we needed to go somewhere with the car, either everyone had to go or you were stuck at home. Since I telecommute and Jon travels, I am ALWAYS HOME. After our Thanksgiving road trip, we realized we needed another car, one with a little more space. A family car.
When Jon and I started car shopping, it quickly became apparent we would never be able to compromise and both be happy. We went to a car show and I almost had a heart attack when he sat in a sedan. When you are married to someone who is 6'4" and you ride in a Corolla, you NEVER get the armrest. I wanted a car where I got the armrest. After much discussion, we decided to NOT compromise and the new car would be my car. MY CAR! In the end, we bought a silver Honda CR-V. A family car yet still relatively fuel efficient.
Yesterday at lunch, Jon and I took the maiden voyage in the new car. We drove around with the sunroof open. We programmed NPR on the radio. We went to Sonic where I ordered cherry limeade and cheese tots. Jon said it was a good reminder the new car is MY CAR because no way would the maiden voyage in his car include staining fluids and cheesy greasy foods.
Jon installed car seats and we picked the boys up from day care in the new car. Nate was super excited and got in like he owned it. Alex talked a big game about the car, then had a complete freakout over the sunroof. He cried and cried and yelled, "I no like the sunroof!" I told Jon I was not backing down because we are going to be driving around with the sunroof open all summer in MY CAR. Eventually Alex stopped crying.
It was gorgeous again yesterday so we all ate dinner outside. I played with the boys while Jon cleaned up. Before going inside, Alex climbed into my lap, put his arms around my neck, kissed my cheek, and said, "I like the sunroof."
That's my boy.

Great! I have been curious about the new car and hoped a car-related post was forthcoming. The CR-V's are so cute. My mom (who is very young for her age!) just gone the exact same thing.
I keep forgetting to open my sunroof! I need to do that TODAY!
Congrats on the new wheels!
I find the "staining fluids" discussion to be hilarious.
WooHoo for YOUR new car!! Like Lindsay said, the CR-V is so cute. I would have preferred that over the Pilot, but Mitchell T had to have the bigger motor.
Hi Laura - Glad you are enjoying your new car ! I laughed at Jon's rules for new cars - make him watch the youtube video of Randy Pausch's Last Lecture. Randy died recently of pancreatic cancer but he gave his Last Lecture at Carnege Mellon U. after being diagnosed with cancer. It might put THINGS into perspective for Jon ! Libby's mom - BeBe
I cannot imagine not having a car. It just does not fit in to my view of reality. Really, I can't wrap my mind around it.
We have a 99 CRV and I've been trilled with it. It's a good compromise between being practical and being fuel efficient. I think you are really going to love yours. They have really improved them over that past 10 years. They have gotten so cute too.
We considered the CRV as well and it is definitely cute. We ended up with the Pilot to give the dog more room (I kid you not). My husband telecommutes as well and we were able to trade in his 1999 Honda Civic for big bucks since it had less than 35K in miles! Hondas are great, reliable cars. Enjoy the ride!
Congrats on the new ride! I was considering a CR-V before I knew we were having twins and opted for the mommy-mobile. I hope you love it!
Congrats on the new car! I loved this post. Way to stand your ground - greasy food, staining fluids, and sunroof! A girl's got to have her priorities! Especially in a house full of boys.
I love that all your men want you to be happy! :)
Congrats Laura! That is exciting. If I had two kids, that is what I would pick too. Especially the sunroof! Great choice.
I hope you all have many miles of family fun in there!
YAY for your new ride! I got the same car a year 1/2 ago and we have really enjoyed it. I cruised with the sunroof open for the first time alone a few weeks ago. Yeah, I felt like a rock star!

Loved this post - Alex makes me smile.
Glad you are loving your new car! Funny - I had a silver Corolla and when I traded it in I got a Silver CR-V. When I was pregnant with the twins I upgraded from the CR-V to a bigger (gas guzzling) Ford Explorer.
Yay new car!! We are thinking about getting the CR-V. Its either that or a gas guzzling Minivan. Believe it or not, my husband is the one who wants the Minivan. Never thought I would see the day he would push for that...
Can I take credit at ALL for this purchase being your butt rode to DC in my 2008 version with seat warmers on no less. I love that the 1st trip out was to Sonic.
Also love that you got your 1st choice, and Jon tried to say Sunday that they had "sold" the blue one... yeah sure... that's what you get to imposing rules.
Here's to many great family trips in your new car! Especially enjoy the sunroof.
As I was driving home from Chapel Hill today I had XM blaring and I kid you not, they played She Bop then I Touch Myself by the divinyls back to back. Luckily all got to enjoy as my sunroom was open.
Yay for a new car!! I drive a Matrix (almost the same as the Corolla) so I know what you mean about the hubster hogging the armrest! But... it's paid for... so we aren't doing anything for a while in regards to getting a new car!
And... mmmmmmm... cheese tots!
You made me laugh- deal with the sunroof, ha!
Now I'd like to be a fly on the wall in your car.
My Brady also hated the sunroof. I, too, made him deal with it. It's the saving grace of driving a minivan and I'm NOT giving it up. Enjoy!
Always nice to log on and get a giggle! What a riot! The discussion about rules cracked me up! So glad you got a space to call your own! My mother in law just bought the same car- and loves it! Enjoy!
I was waiting for the new car announcement too. How fun!
Maybe this means I'll get a new car! When my husband and I met, we both lived in Chicago, were both without a car, he had to get one for his job, it was a Toyota Corolla, and to this day he still bans any food or drink (except for Nina's sippy cups and occasional snacks), and I always have to record the mileage when I fill up. Now we've moved to NC and he is a stay at home father, stuck in Saxapahaw. I keep hoping that he'll want to get another vehicle soon!
My kid Finn HATED our sunroof last summer. I have a Subaru Forester, so it's got one of those HUGE sunroofs that span nearly the entire car-length. I LOVED it. Reid LOVED it. Finn freaked out whenever I opened it...even part-way. We had a gradual intervention and I am happy to report that he can now 'deal' with it. It was 30 degrees yesterday...grounds for the inagural sunroof opening in my book.
Congrats on the new ride!
