It's not that I didn't believe the kids could make it. It's that we had a horrible, horrible traveling experience when they were 15 months old that scared us from plane travel for 10 months. In my head, I knew the worst case included vomiting and unending crying. And our flight had been four hours... this car ride was going to be 14 hours. And there is no option for an adult to get in back of our small sedan.
What I did not anticipate was Nate's desire to be a complete couch potato. As we found out on this trip, he will watch TV for 14 hours straight if we let him. Nate was in his own personal heaven - watching all his favorite shows, eating all his favorite snacks on demand, and someone occasionally changing his diaper. It sounds eerily similar to my version of heaven, although mine also includes some expensive red wine.
With Nate content, that left just Alex for us to keep happy. Alex's attention span was about two hours, so after that the passenger kept him happily bribed with snacks (licorice was a big hit as it is both a toy and sugary) and a series of new toys I purchased specifically for the trip. Biggest hit: $1 plastic Slinky. Biggest bust: Color Wonder markers thrown to the floor because they were "broken." Another hit: playing the recorder with my nose.
We stopped at rest areas every three hours to let the boys run wild and change diapers. Then we gassed up and bought new snacks, hit a drive-through for food to eat in the car, and changed DVDs. On the way back, it rained 11 of the 14 hours so we let them run wild in fast food places. Bad, I know, but somehow everyone found the twin factor very cute as the boys chased each other through Bojangle's. (For anyone tired of fast food while on a long car ride, Bojangle's is perfect as you can get mashed potatoes, biscuits, and mac and cheese.)
I spent a bit of time thinking about how to organize the car in our very limited space. The ipod and FM transmitter were in the glovebox for us. The DVDs were in the armrest for easy access. The extra snacks and drinks were behind the driver so the passenger could reach it. Everything else was in the trunk so we could be comfortable. Even with all the planning, we now understand why parents often choose larger cars.
As for products, here are my thoughts:
* Travel trays = awesome. While the boys used them to eat food, the most important use was to stop toys from falling to the floor. With the trays strapped on, it bought us a lot more time before Alex became impatient.
* Sippy straps = worthless. The boys undid the velcro in the first 10 minutes.
* Dual headrest DVD player + toddler headphones = PRICELESS! They watched their shows the whole time and we didn't have to hear any of it.
By far, the most important item of the trip was the movie Polar Express. I almost drove Jon insane looking for this movie ahead of our trip, but it was so worth it. The boys LOVED it and watched it countless times. I *think* they watched it SIX times on the way back. They watched it in the hotel room at night while we unpacked. They watched it in the morning while we packed up. When I asked their favorite part of the trip, they both said Polar Express.
The hotel travel was also very easy. Jon and I each slept in bed with a boy, trading off nights with restless-sleeper Alex for nights with sleeps-like-a-log Nate. When Alex got up early one day, I took him to hit the breakfast buffet for coffee and snacks then for a little walk around the property. They loved the elevator and they loved running around the room exploring everything from the phone to the AC buttons.
As for everything else, we let things slide. The boys barely ate any food the entire trip. Nate didn't nap any of the days. We resorted to driving around to let Alex nap two of the days, accounting for the other 200 miles of this trip. We were pretty lax about discipline, schedules, and structure and it felt pretty great.
After going on this trip, I really feel like we can do anything with the boys. I feel like we've made it to a new level with them and it feels spectacular. To sit in a car together for 28 hours and not hear one single minute of crying.... it went far beyond my expectations.
Tomorrow will be a huge picture roundup of an incredibly special trip to visit with family. Today I offer a sneak peek of the boys at my favorite beach in the entire world, Siesta Key, where the white sand is like sugar.
When Jon and I took a walk there on the morning of our wedding day and talked about our dreams for our life together, this is what I imagined. Nate ran right into the water and Alex chased seagulls and I almost cried from the sweetness of it all.

You are my IDOL, hero, roll model....I could go on and on and on. We've only done one overnight trip away with the girls and it was almost a year ago and we stayed for one night and then chickened out and went home. I think the girls were fine - J and I were a mess. I plan on making J read this post so he knows that it CAN be done. And I've always talked alot of smack about how I never needed a DVD player on long car trips so my kids wouldn't need one either. But after reading your post I'm thinking that portable DVD players must be God's gift to parents and I'm sure that if my folks had access to one they would have used it to keep me quiet! BRAVO!!!!!! Again - you are my IDOL!
Sounds like a wonderful trip! It also sounds like your incredible planning made it possible. Go Mommy! Now I need to find Polar Express for William. He loves the book!
Impressive schedule -- we had a very hard time reaching 3-hour intervals and so stopped more frequently. I also wasn't ready at that time -- am now -- to just be OK with them watching TV the entire trip.
Also think it was smart to do it in one day. We did ours in two with a night to stop ... both have their good and bad points. But second day was HORRIBLE as we were all just tired of riding.
Glad you had a great trip. I remember when we finally got to Georgia and I saw my mom I just sobbed ... the kind a survivor cries when they finally find land or something.
I think only a minivan is the perfect travel vehicle for twins in car seats ... our SUV doesn't even have space for a person in the back with them. That was very annoying to deal with the entire four days.
We'll be going back in May/June and I'm sure this time will be easier. I'm sure of it. lol
Wow! 28 hours in the car w 2 toddlers and no crying? You must have made a deal w the devil because I didn't think that was possible. Good for you, and I can't wait to see the pics!
Awesome, awesome! And that's such a great picture, I can't wait to see more!
Wow, glad to hear it went so well! Our own trip was only 6 ours and my kid stared out the window nearly the whole time! We really need to get him a DVD player for the car.
oh my goodness, that last line and the picture brought tears to my eyes...just beautiful!
We are thinking of road tripping to Chicago next Summer with our 3 for my sister's wedding. I've been telling my husband he is MAD for even suggesting it. But your post made me re-think! So glad your trip was tear-less!
And I love the boys sunglasses. Too Cute!
I love how you plan everything. It makes me feel a little better about my considerable planning habit.
I can't wait to see pictures!
Oh I LOVE siesta Key!! That is the first vacation mark and I took together after we got engaged.
Im glad you guy had a great trip! You give me hope that maybe I can take a vacation this summer with my 2.
That is awesome Laura...it's funny looking back at this journey from square one hey? I bet you never thought you would get to this point. Now you have these two "grown up" boys and life is starting to regain some sort of normalcy! That is great. I can't wait to see more pictures from your trip :)
Oh and I think I MUST get a copy of Polar Express... perhaps a Christmas gift for the kiddos?
Great post! Obviously, we are also huge fans of the portable DVD player. I'm glad we decided to do that instead of pay for the one installed in the car. Now I think I need one of those TiVos that can burn DVD's!
Where's the bad and the ugly? =) Will definitely have to try some of your tips on our next trip. Wish ours was to the beach, though! And silly me, I've never thought about splitting up the sleeping, I've always pictured the kiddos trashing at each other in one bed while we're in the other... duh!
What can I say? I am in awe! Good for you guys! Sounds like a blast! And I'm with the pp, where is the ugly and bad? Sounds like you are part planner but also fine with "letting go". GO YOU four! So glad you could enjoy.
Glad your trip went well. Look forward to seeing the rest of your pics!
I'm another Laura with fraternal twin boys - mine are a few months older than yours! I love the tray idea - what a great idea even as they get a few years older! (came here from How Do You Do It)
awesome! you make montana or something of the sort seem doable for next year. i love the idea of travel trays. it would have been handy in catching the excorcist like vomit owen spewed both ways. way up: mama's hands (i know, sick) way down : a huge towel. see, i am learning?
what a story...what a journey... after all you did the best for all of them....
keep blogging,
Toddler Toy
so fantastic! isn't it just amazing to witness these moments, just like you imagined them happening? oh the joy! it's like they're this vision for so long, and then all of a sudden it happens and you realize how crazy special it is. i can just imagine that feeling you had on the beach or you and john stealing a knowing glance in the car with the boys content in the backseat. awesome!
What great encouragement!!! We just recently invested in the dual dvd system and it's been such a hit we are thinking about attempting a road trip. I too am a big planner, well I guess with 2,
2 1/2 year olds you have to be!! So glad you had a great trip, hope we will too!
Congrats on such a successful trip! You certainly are brave to embark on such a long car trip with twin toddlers, so glad it worked out so well for you!
